It is with great sadness that I inform the Ward 5 community about the transition of noted civil rights activist, Rev. Edith Barksdale Sloan on Jan. 24, 2012.  Funeral services were held Fri, 2/3/12.  Edith helped break barriers and cycles of pain, using her skills in the area of Consumer Protections bringing about changes for the public's common good.

Her son, Douglass Sloan writes below about his treasured mother and her service to the community and nation at large. The obituary is attached.

My thanks to Edith, and rest in peace!

FYI, my mother, Edith Barksdale Sloan, died last Tuesday, January 24th at Holy Cross hospital.  We are holding services this Saturday, Feb. 4th at 3rd Street Church of God located at 1204-3rd Street, NW.  The wake is at 10:am and the service begins at 11:am.  After the service the internment will be held at Glenwood Cemetery at 2219 Lincoln Road, NE.

She accomplished quite a bit in her lifetime.  I’ve attached her obituary and a biography compiled by the Oxford African American Studies Center.  She was a Peace Corps volunteer in the 60’s, appointed Executive Director of the National Committee on Household Employment in 1971, appointed to the DC Office of Consumer Protection in 1976 by Mayor Walter Washington, received a presidential appointment to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) by Jimmy Carter in 1978 and received a Juris Doctorate from Catholic University and attended Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.

For more info on her storied life check out: http://dev.anb.org/article/print/opr/t0001/e3738?image_size=inline or just Google her name & several articles appear.  Her obit is more accurate regarding dates & particulars.  Please pass the word of her passing.  Thanks.

Douglass Sloan
