Hi Guys

I finally got fed up with trying to get the Raspberry to Mesh.

So my MP02's arrived today. Speedy Delivery.

This is what I will be trying to do..

1. Some Data Transfer between the two MP02s
with one of them connected to the Internet.

2. I dont need analogue phones attached but I do need SIP Phone access from Smart Phones.
Is this an already integral part? i.e. Is Freebbx/Asterix installed.

3. Is Billing Installed or do I need a seperate serveer for this.

I can't seem to find any documentation for the MP02
I need to know what is the difference between the Lan and the Wan ports.
Which port to connected to the Internet? I'm guessing the WAN?
Which port should I use to configure the MP02?  LAN?
What is the USB Port for?

Is the latest SECN2.0 installed?
Can I use the SECON2.0 User Guide.

Some advice as to initial setup would be useful

Thanks
Leonard

The lack of consistent support for ad-hoc mode across hardware platforms has been an achilles heel for mesh networking.  If all manufacturers built in standardised support for ad-hoc mode, things would be more interesting.

Sounds good.

Asterisk is not installed by default on the MP2 Basic devices.  You can either install it from the command line on the MP2 or install a version of the MP2 firmware that has Asterisk pre-installed

3. Is Billing Installed or do I need a seperate serveer for this.

Billing is definitely not part of the MP2 distribution.  This is something you need a separate server for.

I need to know what is the difference between the Lan and the Wan ports.

This is something we need to find a simpler way of explaining.  The LAN and WAN ports are identical, it just depends on how you configure them.

By default the LAN port is configured as part of the Layer2 batman-adv mesh and the WAN port is disabled by default.

Which port to connected to the Internet? I'm guessing the WAN?

For simple transparent connectivity to the Internet, you can connect the LAN port to your gateway.  If you want to do the same with the WAN port, select "Change WAN socket to LAN" on the WAN page and save.  Then both ethernet ports will behave in the same way as transparent connectors to whatever your upstream gateway is.

If you enable the WAN port in "WAN mode", they you will be NAT'ing your upstream connection separating it from your local network.  You are probably already NAT'ing at your Internet gateway so often this option is not desirable as one NAT is plenty on most networks.

Which port should I use to configure the MP02?  LAN?

Yes, to start with,  connect to the LAN port to configure the MP2.  You will need to set a static IP address on your computer to do this as the LAN port is not configured to hand out IP addresses.  Set your computer network connection to something like IP: 10.130.1.99  Subnet: 255.255.255.0 and gateway: 0.0.0.0 and then browse to http://10.130.1.20

What is the USB Port for?

Typically things like 3G dongles or extended storage via usb memory stick.

Is the latest SECN2.0 installed?

It should have the latest version although we have had a few releases recently in the run up to the full 2.0 firmware release.  It should tell you on the web configuration page which version you're using.

Can I use the SECON2.0 User Guide.

Yes please, see link above.

Some advice as to initial setup would be useful

I hope that's a start.  I did send you a link to the User Guide along with the shipping reference but did you not get a one page quickstart guide with your MP2s?  That would be our bad in that case.  Please let me know if not so I can follow up on it.

Cheers... Steve

Thanks
Leonard

Steve

Thanks for the speedy response. I didnt get a shipping note or the one page startup guide.

just a speedy delivery :-)

If you could attach the one page startup guide.

I wondered why I couldnt get through to any of the listed IP addresses.
I may need to set my IP on the PC to fixed.

Next Job is to find that out

Thanks
Leonard

The one-page quickstart guide is attached.  I'll follow up to find out why it wasn't included.

Thanks... Steve

Thanks for that.

I'm happy to report that node 1 is up and running and connecting as a gateway to the net.
I've given this a SSID of VT-SECN-AP-A  to differential it from other nodes.
I've left the mesh ssid 'as is'

When I work on node 2 is it ok to set the SSID to ....... AP-B ?
How will I know of they are 'meshing' ?  (What a delightful verb)

Lastly is there any phone service enabled on the basic version at all?  i.e.
could I use any sip phone or do we start from scratch?

Oh BTW - in case I 'brick' it, is there a 'factory' default switch?

Thanks guys

Yay - Sorry to sound so happy but I got my first two node mesh up and running YAY!

Node A - Provides Gateway to a router and the Internet
Node B - Is just an access point but successful transfers data to Node A and out to the web.

I now need to find out whether I can get onto the admin sections of each node
by a discrete IP address as I dont really want to keep using the initial setup method

Thanks Steve for your help

It all depends on your network setup.
If your pc gets an ip adress in the range of the mp's then you can just login to the admin interface.
if you connect node A with the WAN port and enable DHCP on the advanced tab your set.
This will work perfect for a 2 node setup (limitation of secn2)
for production network i suggest you setup a separate dhcp server connected to the lan port and disable dhcp in the advanced tab.

Thanks Steve for your help

Hi Leonard

Sounds like you are making good progress.

If you look at the VT Downloads page you will see RC4 firmware for MP2 that has Asterisk built in. Your new units may not have this latest firmware but it is easy to upgrade via admin page.

Asterisk is set up to support Softphone usage and this is described in the User Guide.

Apologies the new User Guide including MP 2 is not ready yet, but most is the same anyway.

It is a good idea to change the IP address of at least one of the devices from the default 10.130.1.20 so that you can access them separately. Do this on the Basic admin page, save and reboot.

A good idea is to make one change at a time so less risk of getting lost in the config.

The MP2 supports OpenWrt failsafe mode via the reset button on start up as a last resort recovery. Ser the wiki page for an article on this.

Regards
Terry
