I am using both Chrome and Firefox. I've purchased both licenses.

When I go to download a file (not convert to mp3, just straight download), it states I need to install the license).

I do not own this computer and do not have administrative rights.
How can I go back to a version that doesn't require the companion app to just straight download a file in Firefox or Chrome?
Also, will this application work with Brave as well? (Brave can use most of the Chrome extensions.)
It's an obvious screenshot but:

Again, I know the companion is needed to convert, but I've never needed it to just download.
Thanks,

Thanks for that !

This is not supposed to happen. Can you double check you did not request a conversion ? If you still get that behaviour, can you share the link to a page containing the mp3 media ?

If you are on Windows, this will certainly prevent you from installing the companion app. On Mac or Linux, there are workarounds.

That didn't change. When the media is available through a single URL, you do not need the companion app (or a license anyway). However, more and more web sites now stream media using the HLS protocol which allows a better control of the quality vs bandwidth, and for technical reasons, requires the companion app.

It will certainly work as long as you don't need the companion app. Otherwise it depends how engineers from Brave chose to design the native messaging protocol which is used to talk to the companion app.

Note that if you cannot install the companion app on this machine, you don't need to register the license as it won't give you any advantage. Plus, the license requests the companion to be installed to verify itself. Maybe this is the source of your problems.
