Read this, you dumb ass.
Detroit - General Motors Corp. stopped making the Pontiac Fiero in
1988. But the ill-fated tw0-seater car hasn't stopped plaguing GM.
For the second time in less than three years, the No. 1 auto maker
is recalling the plastic-bodied car because of defects that have
caused
engine fires and injuries. The first Fiero recall, in 1987, targeted
1984
models only. This one affects all 244,000 Fieros ever built that were
equipped with the car's standard four-cylinder engine. (GM equipped
some
Fieros with an optional six-cylinder engine; those cars aren't being
recalled.)
The new recall is sure to enshrine the Fiero as one of Detroit's
greatest lemons ever, and perhaps as a symbol of all that went wrong
with
GM in the mid-1980s. Pervasive quality problems prompted hordes of
consumers
to defect from GM cars and buy competing models, knocking GM's share
of
U.S. car sales below 35% last year for the first time since the 1930s.
The
quality of GM cars has improved greatly over the past several years,
according
to the company and competitors alike, but it may take years for the
company's
reputation to fully recover.
The Fiero's innovations included a plastic-panel body and an engine
tucked behind the front (and only) seat. When the car was introduced
in 1984,
it was a smash hit that helped propel Pontiac out of the doldrums and
make it
GM's leader in sales growth. GM sold 102,000 Fieros that first year,
well
above expectations.
But by 1987 sales were running at less than half that pace, partly
because Japanese auto makers had introduced their own two-seat models.
Then,
on the day before Thanksgiving, GM announced a recall of all
1984-model
Fieros, saying that engine fires had erupted in one of every 400 of
those
cars.
Because of its mid-engine design, the Fiero held just three quarts of
oil instead of the standard four, so it was easy for drivers to let
the oil
get low. When that happened, GM explained, an engine connecting rod
could
break and shoot through the side of the engine. GM said the resulting
hole
allowed oil to spurt onto the hot engine exterior and ignite.
In the first recall, GM adapted the cars to hold four quarts of oil,
installed new dipsticks, and put on a warning label that read: "Check
engine
oil at every fuel fill." At the time, the company said that it didn't
"see
the incidence" of fires in later models.
But a spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration
said that "monitoring of the Fiero found the previous fix hadn't
completely"
eliminated engine fires. Besides the engine rod problem, he said, the
engines of all tof the four-cylinder Fieros have leaky seams that
permit
oil to spill onto the hot engine and exhaust parts, and thus ignite.
It isn't clear how GM will fix the oil leak. Although the auto maker
agreed on a recall with the federal traffic-safety agency in late
December,
it hasn't proposed a remedy for the problem. A spokesman for GM's
Pontiac
division said Fiero owners won't be advised about the recall for
another
month.
Your statement was and is still ignorant.

Also, what would give you the impression that I was hiding? Because I
use a nickname? my email address is valid, Dick Tracey - try it.
Anyone with half a brain could figure out what my real name was in
less than a minute. But in your case - lemme do the math here - it
would probably take about 2 days.
And I have a hobby: readin' & 'rithmatic

For the same reason you would waste your time
starting a discussion about a car that has been out
of production for 14+ years? You have no life.

Isn't that the sound you make when your mommie
shovels Pablum into your big mouth?

You're a Dick? There's a surprise!
I'm pretty sure everyone only took two seconds
to figure out you're a Dick.

Obviously it's a hobby with you because you're not
very good at either.
>So? Where does the article support your "death trap" statement? The 84 (and

So, you're saying that a situation when driving along and the engine
mounted DIRECTLY BEHIND YOUR HEAD bursts into flames is not
potentially life threatening? What the hell do you drive, a Pinto?
But, if you want to be a grammarnazi(TM):
http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=deathtrap&r=2
death·trap Pronunciation Key (dthtrp)
n.
An unsafe building or other structure.
A perilous circumstance or situation.
I'd say that an engine fire less than 2 feet from your head meets the
second definition nicely. Therefore, a deathtrap a Fiero potentially
is. At least, according to the material, one out of every 400
produced.
Achtung! Now vee are trying to use der dichzionary to proov der point? Tsk
tsk tsk.
Seriously, if the engine was two feet away without anything between me and
my head I would agree with you.
But there's a FIREWALL between you and the engine, not to mention the hood.
You're really just reaching now. It's pathetic.
Oh, and Pintos BLEW UP on impact. So why not compare apples and oranges
whydontcha?
