Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday in Lagos stated that nothing could embarrass him.

Obasanjo who was speaking with newsmen at the Presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, on reports that he was booed and pelted with eggs in London two weeks ago.

A group of Nigerians and other Africans precisely from Congo besieged the London School of Economics (LSE) on March 18, where Obasanjo delivered a lecture on the unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to embarrass him.

He said the amount was made up of 368 million euros (N112 billion) off-shore component and N18 billion on-shore component.

"The project was capable of generating 300 megawatts of power to the national grid, adding that only 30 megawatts was being generated under the first phase" he said.

He added that the dam was also capable of supplying water to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) till 2050 and beyond, if government desired it.

The Chairman of the committee, Sen. Idris Umar, told newsmen later that appreciable progress had been made on the project, and expressed the need for proper maintenance of its facilities.

Court of Appeal orders retrial of Aregbesola's petition

Ahmed Bankole, Ibadan Oyo

The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan on Monday ordered the Osun Elections Petition Tribunal to retry the petition of Action Congress's (AC) governorship candidate in the April 2007 gubernatorial election, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola.

Aregbesola had gone to the appellate court to challenge the July 15, 2008 verdict of the tribunal, which upheld Gov. Olagunsoye Oyinlola's victory.

In its judgment, a panel of the Court of Appeal, headed by Justice Victor Omage, said the petitioner was denied the use of vital documents to establish his case.

The documents, according to the appellate court, are Forms EC8A, EC8B, EC8C, EC8D and EC8E.

``On no account should a party be refused his documents to assist him establish his case.

``Election petition must be handled with care. The tribunal was wrong not to have admitted the forms", Omage said.

In the more than one-hour judgment, Omage said that when an appeal satisfied its purpose, it should not be struck out.

``I consider issue three (the non-admission of the forms) in the appellant's amended brief of arguments and interlocutory, as crucial to his case", Omage said.

Omage, who led four other judges, said that the rejection of the security reports at the tribunal was wrong.

Reacting to the judgment, Oyinlola's lead counsel, Mr Yusuf Ali (SAN), said the judgment was fine.

``We are starting all over. That is the beauty of it; there is opportunity for all the parties to ventilate whatever they think is/are their grievances.

"On our part, it is a welcome development. It is like there is no victor, no vanquished. We don't see it as a defeat. For us, we see it as victory, victory for democracy and victory for rule of law", he said.

In his reaction, Aregbesola's lawyer, Mr Charles Edosonwan (SAN), said the verdict was a message for future tribunals that at all times they must conduct themselves ``with substantial justice in mind".

He said the Osun tribunal based its judgment on technicalities rather than "substantial justice".

Is anyone surprised? No of course. Any other former president of his country would have done some reflection on the public indignity that he suffered in London, England from his own people. One is reminded of the warmth, affection, and reverence that mark Nelson Mandela's welcome to London, England when he visits.
The man, Obasanjo is unthinking, unfeeling, and inheeding. He has little or no expectations of himself. He has neither public or private standards. The man has no shame. He might even be sick. It is no surprise that he is incapable of improvement as a private orpublic person. Like bad wine, he gets worse with age.
That a man so flawed, predictable, and incapable of reflection and redemption was two times Nigeria's Head of State should be  food for thought for all Nigerians. Nigeria's near bottom position as a country in the hierarchy of nations will be deserved as long as persons such as Obasanjo continue to be in positions of power, wealth, and influence in Nigeria.

I agree completely. Something must outrage you, embarrass you, shame you as an individual. When you get to the point where nothing does or can, that is the outrage, embarrassment or shame itself. It is like not believing in anything. In which case you can actually fall for everything. I know our former President is beyond outrage,  embarrassment or shame. All the same, I feel outraged, embarrassed and shamed on his behalf.

Basil
