Acceptance of Cloud Providers by Government Agency

I don't see any of these platforms on the negotiated TOS agreements?

Also I don't see AWS on there either? Is AWS used by your agency?

I would like to develop API deployment toolkits, but want to allow for launching on the PaaS platforms your agency is already using...

Kin,

AWS has a special region of their service called GovCloud. From what I can understand, it's the same thing as normal AWS, just FedRAMP/FISMA/everything-compliant. DOT, DOE, State, USDA, and NASA are all listed on their website AND they just got the greenlight for CIA, so I'm guessing they check out.

Aws is under review by usaid. Google apps is in full use by usaid and state, not by White House tho. Not sure about the others but can ask if you've got a reason I can share with CIO?

HHS is moving in that direction. Cloud based email. 

Also offering AWS for data storage within HHS and across federal government. GSA is covering cost of storage until 2015 I believe for agencies that are just standing up their data repositories for public use, etc.

Several HHS agencies store open data on Socrata. Samhsa, ASPE (HSMP), some CMS. Not sure if that fits what you're thinking about.

Yes, Jed and Joe are right about the State Dept. History.state.gov,
the website of the Office of the Historian at State, is hosted on AWS.

Thanks everyone.  Sounds like creating AWS AMIs is probably the best opportunity for providing deployable, open source API templates for agencies.

Thanks Kin, please let us know what you find. Usaid is definitely pursuing the aws route. But if there's a benefit in diversifying our proverbial portfolio, I'm happy to not give all govie contracts to one bulk data org

I agree with the diversification perspective.  As much as I love AWS currently, there is huge benefit in being platform independent.

I will be starting with AWS API tools, but rapidly diversify to other common platforms, hoping govies can put to use anywhere.
