The Center for Sustainable Living is excited to announce the debut of Camp SustainAgility, a new day camp empowering middle school-aged children with the will and the skill to reshape our future. What exactly is sustainability? Sustainability has been defined by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development as “meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” How can children develop skills to live more sustainably? By allowing the next generation to understand, through hands-on experiences, projects, and investigations -regarding all things sustainable- we teach the rationale for living a healthier, more abundant lifestyle.
The camp offers a choice of tracks in various areas of regenerative living skills. For example, campers in the Do It Yourself track can learn to make their own hair care products, toothpaste, fruit roll ups, energy bars, and yogurt, all chemical free made with natural ‘local’ materials. Campers will also learn how to plant vegetables and flowers that attract beneficial insects to naturally contribute to a pest free garden without the use of chemicals. Children participating in the Tree Hugger track learn tree identification and uses, water purification, and preparedness for emergencies, CPR and first aid training, and bike maintenance.
The camp has been scheduled in coordination with Victor Parks and Recreation and will run from August 12-16, 2013; 9am - 4 pm. This week long camp will wrap up with a Community ‘Show and Share’ and a Commitment to Change Celebration on Friday August 16th at 3:00 p.m.
