SCG's last night will be Dec. 19--according to the Wrap, guest hosts between then and Mar. 9, when James Corden takes over (with a showrunner coming with him from the UK--they worked together on the telecast of the Brit awards, the UK's Grammys):

So, would it make more sense for Dave to be the lead-in for a few weeks, or to have Stephen start his show in February?  The latter is what NBC did, though the Olympics were involved as well.

I don't believe that CBS is going to gameplan the transitions for ratings bumps. For both shows the priority is going to be to retire the current host, give the new host and showrunner time to put together a staff, and do some practice shows before takeover. For the LS the set is going to have to be redesigned and rebuilt. Craig got a new LLS set during a regular dark week (or fortnight) so James could start on Craig's set and get a new one when he gets time off.

But CBS shouldn't want to rush things and risk screwing up the transition because they might get a rating point or two.

I wager that a minor redesign of the current LLS set would be required right away to eliminate Secretariat's barn door (and possibly the fireplace).

When SCG took over, did he get a new set or was he working on Kilborn's set for all those years? (Meanwhile, up the dial, Seth's set got redone after a mere 6 months, for no good reason.)

Craig II used Craig I's set for a couple years before getting his own, and didn't get a larger studio until a couple years ago.

I recall Conan's set got tweaked early into his Late Night run. Not six months, but I want to say within a year.

And Leno's set evolved constantly, due to him starting across the hall from Johnny's studio, then moving into Johnny's studio, then moving back across the hall a couple years later.
