The onetime TNG ensign's weakly attempt at topical humor barely lasted one season. After multiple excuses, he admitted to THR (link) not enough people watched.

It would be nice to see the pop culture snark beat extend beyond Hardwick and McHale. But I think new entries will need to break from current formulas.
FWIW, the Project's first/only season was 12 episodes, all of which aired. Wheaton tracked production of the show on his blog.
