The hairpiece and the donut-eater make it to the big event.

The leftovers mostly put on the brave face, save for (through a spokesman) former PA senator Santorum.

A friend sent me a link on this earlier today from Fox News with a graphic that looked a bit like the breathless news release ESPN sends out when they announce the NCAA BB seedings.

It is pretty well established how stupid this is (by "this" I mean using polls to pick the ten who get to sit at the "Grown-Ups Table" for the main event). But a more important point is how it illustrates the fundamental fact about the bloated, expensive, bloviating US campaign season (and this would be just as true on the Democratic side when they have a more open race) - so much of it is in the service of TV ratings and advertising. They really have turned it into a reality show. One reason we know Trump will fall back to the pack is that the networks benefit from at least the appearance of a competitive race. Trump's viewer appeal may last longer than Herman Cain's, but either he will make himself more boring in order to seem somewhat electable, making it necessary to bring someone else up from the pack; or he will keep being Trump, and say and do things that make it clear he is unelectable, bringing someone else up from the pack.

Having debates is not a bad idea if it is done right. My criticism
isn't that they cut several candidates. I think they should have cut
more.
Debates are one of the few antidotes to deep pockets. It gives someone
who doesn't have a billionaire sugar daddy a chance to stand out.
That's why I like having early primaries in small states, although I
wish New Hampshire would give it up for a few election cycles.
I think have three debates of five or six each would be much better.
Have the debates participants chosen by lottery.
And by the way, here's another dilemma.
Have you ever heard of Jack Lynn Adams or Pogo Mochello Allen-Reese?
They are also Republican candidates for president. There's 136 who
have filed.
http://www.fec.gov/press/resources/2016presidential_form2nm.shtml
So why does Carly Fiorina, who has never held office and is best known
for her failure at Hewlett-Packard, get to take part in the
consolation debate and others who have also filed do not? Many of
those I suspect have actually served in office at some point.

Here's everyone who filed with the FEC to run as a Republican:and the
date they filed.
