I don't think they're trying to improve the ratings. I think they're
spread thin for talent after all the layoffs and they're trying to
fill airtime.

And I have the feeling that the radio affiliates are not too happy about losing Mike and Mike.

But we don't have to take their word for it. We know that people don't like to have their habits disrupted and the results of breaking up Mike and Mike will be a drop in the ratings. If ESPN radio gets lucky it will only be a temporary drop but the idea that people who currently listen to other sports radio shows in the morning will switch to ESPN because they switched hosts makes no sense. Steve's explanation is more logical no matter what an ESPN spokesperson says.

I agree that it is more logical, but not that it is more logical than just leaving it as is - which makes me think something else is going on. I have not watched the show in a while, but it always seemed the Mikes really were good friends - but maybe there is some friction in their relationship? Or maybe Greenie has always seemed to want to know more SportsCenter type stuff?, or one of them needs a different day part to make their family schedule work? Plus, behind everything, I am always suspicious that, even though it seems counter to their ratings self-interest, ESPN is always looking for ways to undercut personality cults that develop around their on-air talent.

I wonder who is going to replace Dan Shulman on Sunday Night Baseball. My guess would be Karl Ravech, but they have other guys that could do it, like Jon Schambi who does the SNB games on the radio.

The coming Greeny morning show, for which Bristol plans to open a new studio at NY's South Street Seaport (Sporting News story earlier this summer), will, sources say, also include familiar network faces Michelle Beadle and Jalen Rose, who "for now" are not giving up their existing gigs, e.g. "NBA Countdown"... that quote from THR's Marisa Guthrie (link)
