Those of us who haven't been enjoying the show for the last several years will continue to not enjoy it.

While I was happy that Hammond didn't try to do Don Pardo in his announcing, he was so low-key that the introductions were getting lost under the music.

Some observations:

I'm always a little surprised when a season opener is as awful as this one was. In theory, they've had all summer to think of ideas. Tonight's entry had sketches that would have been rejected from a third-grade talent show. (Though having the obstacle of Pratt to overcome couldn't have been easy.)

I guess this is the year the cast finally gives up the pretense that they're acting and just spends all night just reading cue cards. It was during that awful skit with the couple in the bar rapping at each other that I gained new respect for Caesar and company. Not only did the "Your Show of Shows" crew actually act their way brilliantly through 90 minutes, they did it 39 times a year.

The episode wasn't a complete wash-out, though. The new guy -- the one who played the teenager during "Weekend Update" --- was pretty good, and Michael Che brought a -bit- of comic professionalism to WE -- unfortunately, that only pointed out how bad Jose and Strong were. (Though as bad as her character is, it's light years ahead of Moynihan's characters.)

I'm glad you mentioned the introductions. I got a surround sound system over the summer and this
was the first SNL I'd watched since then. I could barely tell Hammond was there amongst the music
and the audience.

Interestingly enough, and I posted as such to my FB... the cold open... Kenan Thompson and Jay Pharaoh are instant comedy gold.

Kenan Thompson OR Jay Pharaoh and ANYONE are instant comedy gold.

ummmmm.  I hope that's sarcasm.  It it's not, your mileage may vary.  :)
