The Eritrean Committee in Israel Protest Against the Isralei Policy Toward Them
We, The Eritrean Asylum Seekers in Israel, are planning to demonstrate against the Ministry of Interior in Tel Aviv, protesting against the long lasting hard conditions and other current developments in the Israeli government's policy regarding asylum seekers. We invite you to participate in the demonstration and help us convey and distribute the core demand and message of the asylum seekers not only locally, but also globally.
Date: December 16, 2008 Time: 11 O'clock in the morning Place: In front of the Ministry of Defense, Kaplan Road, Hakiriya Tel Aviv, near the Interior Ministry.
Among about 13,000 asylum seekers who are present in Israel, more than 5000 are Eritreans. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees prohibits deportation of asylum seekers to Eritrea due to the tangible danger facing those who return. An internal report of the Israeli Justice Ministry described Eritrea as a country in which "human rights violations and political persecution […] are widespread, and include the holding of prisoners of conscience without charging or trial, persecution on religious grounds, the disappearance of citizens, and so forth."[1][1]
At the International Human Rights Week, we request from the Israeli authorities:
1. Allow access to the refugee status determination (RSD) Procedure for those asylum seekers who are already in Israel. 2. Stop the deportation back to Egypt of new asylum seekers who manage to cross alive the Egyptian army bullets, while running for their lives. 3. Stop evacuation of Asylum seekers from Eilat 4. Release asylum seekers detained for long months and stop the continuous threat of imprisonment 5. Stop the geographical restrictions preventing us from providing ourselves and receiving the assistance of NGOs, all situated in Tel Aviv. 6. Give special care for the vulnerable group of our community- women and children 7. Stop depriving our protection documents, claiming we are not Eritreans after the UNHCR officers found us to be Eritreans
We look forward for your participation, assisting us to bring our requests to the Israeli decision makers.
Since we often hear about the Israeli authorities plans to deport us away, we are not allowed to reveal our names and faces to the media. However, as long as you respect our need to hide our identity from the media, we will be please to explain our situation in Eritrea in the past, in Israel in the present, and our goals for the future.
Sincerely Yours The Eritrean Committee.
