Hello,

I have tried with several different .ovpn files. a window pops up confirming that I want to open it. When I select open, the tunnelblick interface appears, but that is all that happens. There is nothing listed under 'Configurations'. Please help!

thanks

Update to Tunnelblick 3.4beta06. You can update easily by putting a check mark next to "Check for updates to beta versions" on Tunnelblick's "Preferences" panel, and then clicking the "Check Now" button.

Double-click works fine on the stable build, but not the beta.  I am running Yosemite 10.10.2.

Which stable, and which beta?

The problem (Tunnelblick does not respond to a double-click of a .conf, .ovpn, or .tblk) should not occur on Tunnelblick 3.5beta02 or higher. If such a version of Tunnelblick is not responding to a double-click on a configuration file, it is likely that your OS X "launch services database" has been corrupted. See http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486.

The problem should only occur on earlier versions of Tunnelblick (and on all stable versions) if you do not close the Tunnelblick window that describes what to do with your configurations (the window that tells you to double-click the configuration file).

Thanks for your reply!  I am running the latest beta, and whenever I open up an .ovpn file by double-clicking, a dialog box says "Tunnelblick is an application downloaded from the internet, are you sure you want to open it?".  I click yes, and nothing happens.  However, when I quit Tunnelblick, and then drag the .ovpn file onto Tunnelblick in /Applications, it works!  I already reset the Launch Services Database, but it still doesn't work.

I had just installed the beta yesterday.  I removed the latest Stable using the uninstaller, and then installed the beta.  The double-clicking worked on the latest Stable before I used the uninstaller, but then when I reinstalled the beta and stable, neither of them worked in regards to the double-clicking.

Thanks for the info. There are a lot of things going on here.

It sounds to me like you have more than one program registered to open .ovpn files. Please try the following:
  1. Reinstall Tunnelblick 3.5beta06 by double-clicking on the icon in the disk image. (Don't bother to uninstall it.)
  2. When the installation is done, click "Launch" to launch the newly-installed Tunnelblick.
  3. Answer any questions that are asked about checking your public IP address, checking for updates, etc.
  4. If you are asked about configurations, just answer that you have configurations and then click "OK".
  5. (So now no Tunnelblick windows are open, but the Tunnelblick icon is in the menu/status bar).
  6. Quit Tunnelblick by clicking on the icon, then clicking on "Quit Tunnelblick".
  7. Eject the disk image.
  8. Right-click (or Control-click) on a .ovpn file, and slide the pointer down to "Open With…".
You should see only one choice -- Tunnelblick. If you see more than one choice, you have more than one application on your system that is opening .ovpn files. You need to find the "extra" copies and delete them. There should only be one Tunnelblick, in /Applications.

I'm not exactly sure how that changed things, but it seems to work now.  Thank you very much for your help!

Double clicking did not work for me either. I had to drag the file onto the Tunnelblick icon in Applications and then it worked. (3.4.3 build 4055.4198)

I had to perform the steps below for 3.5b10 build to get it to recognize the .ovpn file as well.  Running Yosemite 10.10.3 beta.

I had previously tried the launch services db rebuild, but to no avail.

This worked a treat for me. Thanks a bundle. Care to explain how it worked? I'm curious.

There are several possible reasons that double-clicking a ".ovpn" file does nothing:
  1. You were using a version of Tunnelblick before 3.5beta02 and did not close all the Tunnelblick windows before double-clicking the ".ovpn" file.
  2. The copy of Tunnelblick you had was not installed properly.
  3. OS X did not "register" Tunnelblick properly in its "Launch Services" database.
  4. You had more than one copy of Tunnelblick that OS X thought you could run, and it chose the "wrong" one (perhaps an older version) to launch when you double-clicked the file.
  5. You have some other program that has told OS X it could open ".ovpn" files, and OS X was launching that program to open the file.
The procedure was designed to deal with all of these situations.

The procedure might not work if the OS X "Launch Services" database is badly corrupted; there is a different procedure to fix that problem – do an Internet search for launch services corrupt for information about how to deal with that.

Dragging onto the Application icon worked for me... thanks! I did not think to do that.

Tunnelblick 3.6.3beta02 contains a feature which avoids the problems installing configurations. It is available on the Tunnelblick Downloads page.

Starting with Tunnelblick 3.6.3beta02, you can install configurations by dragging them and dropping them on the Tunnelblick icon in the menu bar.

(Configurations have extensions of .tblk, .ovpn, or .conf.)
