A friend was asking about cycling opportunities in the Raleigh/Durham area. Is anyone out there  familiar with the cycling scene in this area? I have performed a cursory check, however, I have not discovered the same wide range of rides available in the Triad. In other words: Is it as vibrant and complete with a Mary Hughes facsimile?

Thanks,
G.

Nah.  There's only one Mary H. :)  But there used to be a woman named Phoebe that ran a bike shop in Cary called Spin Cycles - she - and the shop - were very involved in recreational offerings.  I called the All-Star bike shop that's in the same location, and the guy there said to check out the Bike Forum on their website - that it gets a good bit of traffic.  http://allstarbikeshop.com/bikespeak/index.cfm?forumid=1

Another alternative is to simply start your own party.  Google groups are free.  Create one, put some flyers in the bike shops to get subscribers, find an empty parking lot, map a route and voila! you have a ride.

There is a Raleigh/Durham Cycling Exchange group on Facebook as well as another Google Group called Chapel Hill Cycling for rides around CH and Carrboro. The Triangle/RDU cycling scene is much more extensive than anything in GSO and you will have no problem finding rides out of the many shops, groups and teams in that area.
