Pick up some of those Deerfly Patches.  They always worked awesome for me.

Haha, is this a serious question? I have never conducted a physical count of deer flies. Would the study include biting and non-biting, those that are killed or not killed....this could be an extensive study. ...lol

One place I would steer clear of is the trailhead for the Fire Wardens Trail at Bigelow. It is Satan's den this time of year.

Blackstrap was bad this past weekend, even when I started at 6am on Saturday. The little bastards stayed in me for three hours. We need some cooler nights so they will sleep in longer in the mornings.

Deerflies are part of summer speed training.  Use them as part of your workout!

That's right. And just a 7 minute mile pace will drop them.

And if you run slower, I get some satisfaction in taking them out. I've taken out 2 at a time by blindly clapping my hands above my head. And a total of 22 on a single run.

I've been toying with the idea of coming up with a harness to strap one of these so the racket is behind and overhead. Not sure if that'd be a fire hazard with branches though.

Maybe it's all in my head but Thursday evening at Brad I wore a white shirt and headband, mauled... Wednesday I wore black and really don't remember it being so bad.

Good observation!. Insects have color and heat preferences and black and white differ in both. I was back in black yesterday and had no flies. But I think in my case it was because there were none. You ready to hit the "Go to Camden" Button?

Apparently blue is their favorite color, based on one in-depth study I've read by a UF entomologist.

I think the biggest factors that increase their behavior are heat, high humidity and low wind. That being said, there are those odd days when they're not out when they should be and vice versa. The days leading up to those days are likely factors.

I've kept tallies on their cycles over the years... one thing I've noticed that's pretty reliable is that their numbers and activity start to wane in mid-August and they are practically gone by Labor Day weekend. I suspect that's due to the shorter days. This is the case regardless of heat and humidity; when we had that really awfully hot summer in 2010 they were still done for the year by that first weekend in September. Only a handful of weeks left of dealing with the little jerks.

Sick burn! I think we're all missing the bigger point here which is that we should learn to embrace the suffering that we experience from deerflies. Open up to it, make room for it, accept it, and then turn toward our valued actions. #ohm #therapist

Sort of agree with the squirrel; HtFU!  This year's crop isn't even that bad compared with previous years.

Lol! Too bad there's not a recipe for deer fly something or other... We could harvest them...
