Good Morning,

for past few weeks I'm running into issue that certain first runs of Google Chrome (let's say every 2-3 days) causes in to display an warning that TortoiseSVN prevents it from working correctly and a suggestion that I should uninstall TortoiseSVN in order to fix this situation:

I have described this problem / situation in details in Super User:

https://superuser.com/q/1357123/156554

and here is a link to direct screenshot of mentioned error message:

I must admit that I'm pretty surprised, because I've been using TortoiseSVN for at lest 6-7 years and I have never encountered something like this so far. Moreover, so far I wasn't even aware that TortoiseSVN needs Google Chrome for anything.

I'd like to ask, if this is truly a problem caused by TortoiseSVN or it is rather caused by some problems in Chrome itself?

I have upgraded both TortoiseSVN and Google Chrome to the newest versions, but it didn't solve the problem.

Thank you, kindly, for any help here. Have a nice day.

Doesn't happen to me, and that on multiple machines.
Also, TSVN does not use anything chrome related.
The only way I can think of that Chrome might even "know" about TSVN is when using the file-open/save dialogs because there the TSVN shell extension can get loaded into the chrome process. But then it would be a chrome problem because explorer and all other apps can exit cleanly when they do that.

Try the TSVN settings dialog->icon overlays, check the box "Show overlays and context menu only in explorer".
This will prevent Chrome from loading the TSVN shell extension.

Oh, there's another way: chrome decided that simply being a browser is not enough. It now also scans all files on your machine (kind of a virus scanner). Since it's not documented what that chrome process actually does or does not do, it could be anything...

Thank you for your quick and detailed answer. I have changed the configuration setting, you'll mentioned. I will be observing Chrome (mentioned situation happens once per a week or per a few days) and report results here.

BTW: I really like and enjoy your sarcasm ("chrome decided that simply being a browser is not enough"). It seems that we're exactly the same thoughts about the way where Google and other big companies are going with our privacy.

The virus scanner inside Google Chrome, you're mentioning, seems to be somehow connected with Settings > Advanced > Reset and clean up. So, this process may not be that unknown, as you initially said. But, true, you're right that Chrome wants to be much more than just a web browser.

The problem described in this thread is directly connected with the problem described here: https://superuser.com/q/697618/156554. This is because mentioned error screen about incompatibility between TortoiseSVN and Google Chrome appears only when "Google Chrome didn't shut down correctly" error appears first.

When browser is launched correctly and you manually go to Settings > Advanced > Reset and clean up > Update or remove incompatible applications then you can clearly see that there are no problem and "Done! No incompatible applications found" message appears.

Thus this is 99,99% a bug in Google Chrome that has nothing to do with TSVN except for calling its name.

The good question is whether to bring this bug to Google Chrome's bug center to "clean up" good name of TSVN or whether it is better to ignore it, since it doesn't actually corresponds to TSVN?

As promised, I am reporting that I have unchecked this configuration element and 24 hours later, upon restarting computer, TortoiseSVN and Google Chrome, nothing has changed. Thus, this seems to be Google Chrome's own problem.

I am seeing the same issue. It was also reporting this for Tortoise*Git* in similar fashion, but after upgrading that the message dissappeared. Not sure if that helps because there's nothing in the TortoiseGit release notes about fixing any chrome related issue: https://tortoisegit.org/docs/releasenotes/#Release_2.7.0.0
