Is there a way to save and update a tiddler without closing it?

If you're using an editor like Vim, the bookmarks and registers you've created remain alive only as long as you are editing. When you save/close the tiddler, all that work is lost. But if you don't save, then the changes you've made (for instance, to macros) won't be available.

Has anyone developed a method so that you can save the contents of an edited tiddler to the source (unopened) tiddler without closing the current edited tiddler?

You mean in Vim or in TW? For the latter, there's Thomas' absolutely excellent EditButtons.

I was going to suggest editbuttons as well, 

• however if you edit the text field of a tiddler from another tiddler, or via the view template and macro so you can edit the text field of the current tiddler without loosing focus, it is effectively saving everykey stroke. But of course you still need autosave to write to disk/server.
• This is also true for Saq's recent float editor, which may be a good thing for in class note taking. One tiddler edit at a time keeps it simple for in class.
• I made a tw5 for taking notes when I was on a course, I got frustrated with thinking about occasional saves when I was wanting to think about the course. 
• It can be easy to obliterate notes with an accidental select and single key stroke replacing it. Ctrl-Z Undo and Ctrl-X redo are useful helpers.
