Hi,

I am trying to upgrade my TW from 5.08 to 5.09 by opening up an empty 5.09 file, drag and drop 5.08 file which has all the contents. But no text displays. Is there any fix for the same.

Thanks in advance

Shash

Hi Shash

If you can, open the dev tools in your browser and see if there are any JavaScript error messages in the console.

The most likely explanation is that you've got customisations in your TiddlyWiki that break the upgrade process. The most likely culprit is $:/core/ui/PageMacros; if you've customised that tiddler you'll need to delete your customisations and resave the wiki before you can import it to the blank 5.0.9 wiki. (Alternatively, if there are few enough tiddlers, you can drag and drop them individually).

Best wishes

Jeremy.

Hello Jeremy,

I had not changed the PageMacros. But I had changed the colors. So you intend to say that even changing a few colors will not help the upgrade process?

However I have migrated all the tiddlers individually. My TW notes grow exponentially day by day and I am afraid that I might not be in a situation to upgrade this way in the future. In this case what should be my plan of action for future upgrades. Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,

are there any plans for bulk export so that personal tiddlers can be transferred to the new upgrade rather than vice versa?

I've copied and pasted a few modifications along the way and it's sometimes hard to remember how to undo them for the upgrade so it would be nice to start with a clean slate and then export personal tiddlers to that.

Best wishes

No, an altered palette would be unlikely to cause the problem you're reporting. It would still be helpful if you could respond to my earlier request for details of JavaScript errors, and your browser and operating system.

But there must be some other customisation that is interfering with the upgrade, and I'd like to figure out what it was.

Are you using any plugins? Did you also upgrade them?

The situation is that you have run into a problem with an upgrade. We will figure out what went wrong and then we will fix it so that it doesn't happen to other people.

The plan is to have a more sophisticated upgrade process - in particular, one that is capable of upgrading plugins, which currently have to be upgraded manually.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

I'm not sure what you're asking. The current upgrade process is to import ones existing tiddlers into a new empty file.

Yes, the plan is to improve the upgrade process. In the meantime it is wise to keep your customisations organised. Until we get out of beta there will continue to be occasional changes that are not backwards compatible.

Best wishes

Hi Jeremy,

Please find attached the screenshot after the upgrade process. There are no errors but the content is blank.

No I am not using any plugins as of now.

Hi Sash

It looks as though you've some customisations on the view template, maybe?

When you open the 5.0.8 wiki you should be able to see which shadow tiddlers have been overriden by looking in the sidebar more->shadows tab; any shadow tiddlers that are not in bold type have been overridden by ordinary tiddlers. You'd expect $:/SiteTitle and $:/SiteSubtitle to be overridden, but look for any others, particularly ones with titles starting $:/core/ui/.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Yes the View template is not bold. How should I revert this to the original one.

Hi Jeremy,

I thought the upgrade process was to drag one's wiki file to the new empty, upgraded wiki which then imports one's personal tiddlers or am I missing something?

If so, the problem with this is that it also imports all the customisations which might not work with the new upgrade.
For instance, I've just done this and the new interface is all over the place and I'll have to dig around to disable the customisations which I've introduced over a period, which for a novice isn't easy.

What I was suggesting with the bulk import/export would be to start with the new, empty ugrade and then select tiddlers from the previous version to transfer, rather than the whole wiki which contains stuff you want to leave behind. Obviously if you've got hundred's of tiddlers, there would need to be a facility for doing this.

Best wishes

The current upgrade process is piggybacked on the import mechanism. The plan is to improve the import mechanism so that one can be selective about which tiddlers are imported, and, separately, to develop a more flexible upgrade process that can upgrade plugins. We also need a "safe" mode that disables all customisations; I'm planning to add that imminently.

As it is a shadow tiddler, it will retrieve its original content if you delete the tiddler (be careful, if you want to compare the modified content with the original one, you should copy the content elsewhere before "reseting" the tiddler).
