I'm perfectly willing to accept that this is user error, but it would
be nice if somebody could help me figure out how to fix it.

I downloaded and installed, things seemed to be working, I created a
couple of dozen tiddlers and was well pleased. So I saved and exited.
Then I noticed the file was being saved with a name like index(1).html
or somesuch. So I changed the file name.

Now when I open the file I get an error message about it being
improperly saved.

Once I click OK on that, the site title and subtitle revert to the
defaults.

And I am unable to enter any of the default tiddlers to change the
Title, Subtitle, Main Menu or Default Tiddlers.

I would very much like a way to get access to those tiddlers so I can
edit them AND a way to save the project as a file with a meaningful
name. All without having to re-create the content.

Is there any possibility of doing this? Or am I going to have to
redownload, start again, and copy and paste everything? And if I have
to do that, is there some way I can give it a meaningful name without
recreating the same problem?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

You may get better help if you are more specific as to your problem, perhaps I'm not the only one who didn't fully understand exactly what problem you're experiencing - what do you mean by "can't access" those tiddlers?

What are the specific steps you've tried and what error messages or other results do you get, compared to what you would expect?

Also, what version/flavor of TW are you using, what browser/versions have you tried?

If you didn't use the big green "download" button at http://tiddlywiki.com
to download TW, it may be broken. So opening a TW and use the browser
File:Save As menu doesn't work.

After editing, to save the TW, you need to use TW's internal save
mechanism (see TW right sidebar: Save Canges).

If you use FF or IE saving should just work.
If you use other browsers, you will need the TiddlySaver.jar (java
applet) described at tiddlywiki.com. If you search for
"TiddlySaver.jar" you'll get some more links.

hope this helps
