If you use TiddlySaver.jar, it would be much appreciated if you could
try out the new beta.

To use it, download this file and use it to replace your current
TiddlySaver.jar files:

http://tiddlywiki.com/beta/TiddlySaver.jar

Please give it a try, and leave any feedback here,

Many thanks,

Jeremy

Fedora 16 with Oracle Java 1.7.0_04 ea b18 (ea = Early Access - not
sure how I ended up with the ea version installed):

Firefox 11.0 and luakit 2011.07.22.r1 both work fine.

Mixed results under WinXP and Java 1.6.0_31:

Firefox 11 - beta works fine.
Chrome 18.0.1025.152 m - works with old version, but not with beta.
Internet Explorer - works, but with ActiveX warning dialog when saving
(I didn't spend any time trying to configure IE to permanently allow
the interaction... I never use it for tiddlywiki content).

XP with Java 1.7.0_03:

Firefox - works fine
Chrome - can't get java 7 and chrome to play nice - if anyone has it
working, I'd love to know how.
IE - same behavior as Java 1.6.0

After thoroughly cleaning out all traces of java, I got 1.7.0ea19
working just fine under XP & Chrome (firefox and IE as well), but the
new TiddlySaver.jar still doesn't work under chrome. The old one
still works though, if you accept running it with the expired cert.

On a side note - any idea why the new jar is 12K vs 5K in size?

FireFox and IE don't use TiddlySaver.jar

Chrome and any WebKit based browser does.

There seem to be some new/more functions, that are usefull for devs.

Somewhere at the dev group there will be some posts about it.

Could you try going into the javascript console with the new jar file and execute the following:

document.applets['TiddlySaver'].getLastErrorMsg()

Kind regards,

Hello,

is the new TiddlySaver.jar supposed to work with elder versions of TW?
For me, it doesn't work with TW 2.6.0 through either Opera 11.62,
Safari 5.0.5 or Chrome 18.0.1025.162 m (Windows Vista x64). Opera and
Chrome say

It's not possible to save changes. Possible reasons include:
- your browser doesn't support saving (Firefox, Internet Explorer,
Safari and Opera all work if properly configured)
- the pathname to your TiddlyWiki file contains illegal characters
- the TiddlyWiki HTML file has been moved or renamed

while Safari sais

The original file '[path to my tw/name of my tw]' does not appear to
be a valid TiddlyWiki.

Best regards,
Yakov.

It is supposed to work with older versions of TW, and it does work for me on the computers I've used it on with unchanged MGSD and vanilla TiddlyWikis.

The interesting thing here would be the error in the underlying plugin.  Can you try this in the Javascript Console:

I found an XP computer at work where I could reproduce the problem, and now I can also reproduce it at home.

URL encoding of the applet directory and special characters kill the access restriction code.

Still thinking about how to solve this.

Yes, in Chrome console sais

"java.lang.RuntimeException: File: file:/E:/0_d/EA - TiddlyWiki
learning/learning.html is not in directory file:/E:/0_d/EA%20-
%20TiddlyWiki%20learning"

Didn't get how to open console in Safari; and I've got some major
problems with Opera: it stopped to even load the applets, both old and
new, and restarting doesn't help. The applet element is loaded, but
nothing happens, and Widnows' left panel (is it "trackbar"?) doesn't
show that Java is used. Any ideas?

Hello Grmble,

recently Opera 12 was released and unfortunately the problem remains.
After updating the old TiddlySaver started to work again; this time I
was more careful not to get problems with the old one, so I
* tested the new TiddlySaver on another local drive and
* waited until the new one is unloaded to test whether old one still
works
and the old one still works, at least for now (not sure if previously
it stopped working with or without delay).

Maybe you can at least point how to dig into the problem? (I mean, for
javascript alone I can try to track things via console, but I have no
idea how to do this for javascript+java)

UPDATE: I tried TiddlySaver.jar beta#2, but no change.
I have not retraced my whole trouble shooting path below, however.
------------------------------------

I want to use TW with Windows 7 and the Chrome browser (19.0.1084.56 m).  But I can't save changes. I get "It's not possible to save changes, etc."  Here's my setup:
  1. Fresh download of http://www.tiddlytools.com/quickstart/basics.html.
  2. This is stored on my hard drive (in case the USB format is a problem).
  3. In the same folder is stored TiddlySaver.jar. It's a fresh version.
  4. The html title says "<title> basics - TiddlyWiki v2.5.0 etc ... </title>" -- no issue with missing title.
  5. The folder and documents are not marked in properties as "read-only" or "archive".

I have tried the following download methods for the TiddlyTools TW:
  1. Download button and open file
  2. View source via Chrome and cut-paste into empty document
  3. View source via Firefoox and cut-paste into empty document
These behaviors are present (some details differ) on Opera and
Internet Explorer. Only Firefox works. But these days Firefox
responds slowly and uses a lot of system resources -- I consider
it hardly usable. My TWs are broken, from my point of view,
which is very depressing.

As you noted, the "basics" QuickStart document is using TW250. There
has been quite a bit of work on the TWCore file I/O functions since
then, and you should get the most up-to-date release of an empty
TWCore distribution (TW265) directly from http://www.TiddlyWiki.com/empty.zip
(includes current releases of empty.html *and* TiddlySaver.jar).
Then, use backstage->import (or my ImportTiddlersPlugin) to migrate
tiddlers from your older documents.

enjoy,

  1. Downloaded zip file as directed.
  2. Extracted into folder on hard drive.
  3. Made sure properties for folder and docs were not read-only.
  4. Opened empty.html.
  5. Tried to save and got same error message.  Can't save.

Well, good news for my spirituality ... I decided life with Firefox is really okay.  :-)
