Greetings all.

I noticed today that TiddlyWiki had been updated to 2.6.5 so I thought
I'd update my 2.6.4 version.

When I tried to update it (BackStage / Upgrade) it said that I was
about to upgrade from "http://tiddlywiki-releases.tiddlyspace.com/
upgrade". When I click Upgrade it does a check and then tells me I
have the latest version and says that is 2.6.4.

Is 2.6.5 not available via a normal upgrade, or have I got some sort
of wierd problem going on?

Ian Simcock.

Please state your OS/browser with versions.

Also try PortableFirefox - I'm sticking to the last v3 because of all my plugins.

Hi HansBKK.

I'm using FireFox 9.0.1 on WinXP sp3.

Is there anyway to tell what version a TiddlyWiki is if you can't edit
it to add the Version variable to a tiddler? I can bring the venison
up that the Upgrade option is trying to upgrade from at
http://tiddlywiki-releases.tiddlyspace.com/upgrade but I can't tell
what version it is, though I'd guess that my TiddlyWiki is right when
it says it's 2.6.4 and not 2.6.5.

As for using portable FireFox, the problem didn't look to be browser
related but I did try it in my portable copy I'd set up back when a
FireFox upgrade broke the importing and it says exactly the same
thing.

Are you running version 2.6.5, and if so, did you upgrade manually or
using the BackStage Upgrade option?

Try again now.
I forget what state this is in, but at some point the upgrade code was
pointed at http://tiddlywiki-releases.tiddlyspace.com/upgrade the idea
being that this would hold all released copies of TiddlyWiki. This
doesn't seem to have been updated/maintained. I've manually updated it
now so if you try upgrading now it should work (if you don't run into
the problems described here [1]).

I've made a comment

Use the version macro in a tiddler. It'll tell you your actual
version.

Hi Ian,

If you cannot edit the TW to add the version macro ...
There was a bookmarklet TiddlyInfo at Saq Imtiaz' site lewcid.org that
gave the version of a TW, but I cannot find it anymore at Saq's new
location http://tiddlywiki.squize.org/

But, Eric (Tiddlytools) has a bookmarklet "Show Tiddlywiki Document
info ..." http://www.tiddlytools.com/#InstantBookmarklets that gives
the version as well.

Cheers,

Ton

Hi Rakugo.

I just tried upgrading again and this time it upgraded fine. Thanks
for that.

My next question is how is it that no one else noticed this before? Is
no one else using the built in upgrade option but instead choosing to
upgrade by hand or what?

Ian Simcock.

I usually download a new empty tw. Then I import tiddlers from the
"old" TW.

I'm not very fond of automatic upgrades on any level: OS, browsers or
TW...

I like to be in control of the upgrade process, therefore I always
start from scratch - if at all possible...

Upside: I always have a backup. (OS, browser or TW) when I'm finished
upgrading, - should it turn out that an upgrade broke the system..

Downside: A few extra mouse clicks - and you have to plan each step..
(disable automatic updates to the browser - have a separate home-
partition when using Linux and manually rename TWs..)

Cheers Måns Mårtensson

There are various compatibility issues with modern browsers, and the problems have been around for a long time and are widely known. However, since then stem from conflicts between TW's fundamental data handling model and how browsers now handle data security, there hasn't been a quick and easy fix. Many of the leaders of the community have been working with one or more of the server-side storage solutions, and the developers are working on TW's next generation of core code as we speak.

My preferred solution in the meantime is to stick to portable Firefox v3.6.
