I've been remiss in not reporting progress on TiddlyWiki5 for a few weeks. There’s a new alpha with some fun new features at a new URL:

It's for modern browsers - I generally use it with the Chrome Canary build, which is their bleeding edge alpha version. (It is currently the only browser to implement HTML5's 'download' attribute on the <a> element, which TiddlyWiki5 uses for it's fallback saving mechanism).

The code is now getting to the point where the interactive features are coming together: drop down menus, and the ability to switch between different views of your tiddlers.  Crucially, there is now a new wikitext parser that generates proper HTML tags, and features new syntax for transclusions.

Of course, the new features are all rather provisional, and I'd very much appreciate feedback and thoughts. I've been making some good progress on it, but documentation still slightly lags behind the code, so feel free to ask any questions here.

I made a little video to demonstrate some of the new features on an iPad:

Finally, I've recently taken over the TiddlyWiki twitter account, and will be using it to give updates and news alongside the discussions in this group.

Best wishes

Jeremy

I loved the new features and clapped hands a few time when some of those surprising ones came in.

Great job Russ!

For some reason, viewing the new TW causes my scroll bars to show as if what I am seeing is huge, yet the whole wiki fits on my screen. Theme problem?

Yes, there's still a few problems with the zoomin theme. I'm in the
midst of a refactoring of the story and navigation code which should
sort things out.

Many thanks,

This is looking good, had a quick try on my android tablet and it
seems to work well.

Would it be possible to have tabbed view as well? To me this is more
useful than the horizontally constrained side by side view.

Just a thought.

thanks for the hard work so far

Thank you. I appreciate the android testing as I'm not able to do any
myself. Does any of the touch stuff work on your tablet?

I do have an idea for using thumbnails of tiddlers as the tabs, which
I hope to work on when I have time.

Hi did some win7 testing:

ie9 (9.0.8112.16421):
a) problem with <p> inside button [1]
b) no CSS animations (probably not defined)
c) close tiddler view problem [2]
d) left zoombar is shown but doesn't zoom and doesn't work
e) different view types work nicely (except c).
f) no zoomin view problem [3] but tiddler width isn't correct.

ff13.0.1
a) problem [1]
b) CSS animations work sometimes.
c) problem [2]
d) left zoombar doesn't work, and only pops up, if you change the
"view type" eg classic. That's a new finding.
e) different view types work (except c)
f) zoomin view problem [3]

opera 11.61, 12
a) problem [1]
b) CSS animations work. but "zoomin" open animation is ultra jumpy.
Doesn't look nice.
c) The close animation looks good :) and works with all view types
d) left zoombar only pops up, if you change view type first. Same as
FF d)
e) different view types work
f) zoomin view problem [3]

chrome 21 (21.0.1180.11 dev-m)
a) no <p> problem with buttons
b) CSS animations work (except f)
c) close tiddler works
d) left zoombar pops up but resizing creates artefacts on tiddler
canvas. this is new
e) different view types work
f) zoomin view problem [3]

No crashes - that's cool :)

hope that helps

Thank you for posting this, Jeremy.   Hope all is well.

What will happen with this version if I bring it up on a browser, or maybe an older version of a browser, that doesn't recognize/process HTML5?

Thank you, yes, these presentations were added to blogger some time
ago, and are pretty cool. I think they were rather a response to a
Tumblr's archive view.

I think the animations in TiddlyWiki5 are a bit more ambitious because
they convey meaning about the relationships and structure of content,
and don't just provide decoration.

TiddlyWiki5 itself will require HTML5 to fully function, and will only
run on reasonably modern browsers (hopefully IE9, definitely IE10, and
contemporary versions of Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera).

It is possible to use TiddlyWiki5 to generate a static HTML
presentation that will work in any browser. This can be done as an
independent file, or embedded within the TiddlyWiki5 as fallback
content for older browsers.

Cheers

"Classic" TiddlyWiki runs on pretty much any browser since around 2004, and the plan is that it will continue alongside TW5. Eric Shulman is taking over as lead developer.

TiddlyWiki5 can also generate classic TW documents from their constituent tiddlers, giving some interesting options for dual publication.

Best wishes

I am not sure how anyone else does it but I add TiddlersBarPlugin to every TiddlyWiki I build and my main one would be unusable without it.

Otherwise it is looking great !

Thanks for sharing the latest alpha TW 5. It's really beautiful..

The more it is comforting that TW 2.6 development is continuing simultaneously, so one could still use certain plugins which probably aren't updated that soon, if at all, still be used for some time in a classic TW.

Thanks to Eric.

Hi,
Just had a look at alpha.tiddlywiki.com
Looks great !! now with FF

===

The TypedBlockWikiText tiddler imo has an issue:

see:
Unknown types render as plain text:

$$$text/unknown
Some plain text, which will not be //formatted//.
$$$

Which renders as:

Some plain text, which will not be formatted. <-

The word "formatted" is rendered as italic text

Thanks, I hoped you'd be please that I was finally able to fix that
issue with vertically stretch buttons in Firefox. Saving changes now
works properly in Firefox, too, the file APIs being present and
correct in the latest versions.

I've fixed it so that the default type is now text/plain:

There also should be some filter examples with [current[]] filter

The list macro doesn't implement filters yet.

Yes, you can do:

((( [tag[introduction]] )))

> There also should be some filter examples with [current[]] filter

There's a good example in the ViewTemplate:

((( [is[current]tags[]] ))( $:/templates/TagTemplate ))

This example selects the current tiddler with 'is[current]' and then
selects the tags of that tiddler, and then displays each tag through
the specified template.

Hello,

I'm on Firefox 14.0.1 (Ubuntu 11.10).
When I open alpha.tiddlywiki.com and click on the "Save Static" button (HelloThere tiddler) nothing happens, and the tiddlylinks don't work anymore, neither do the "Docs" or "View" buttons. The "Edit" button still works.
I have to reload the page to go back to a normal behaviour.

OK, when that "Save Static" button is clicked, TW5 constructs a static HTML document containing a snapshot of the tiddlers open in current page. Then it turns that document into a data URI: and opens it in a new tab. The user can then use the browser file/save command to save the file. (The same mechanism is used by the "Save changes" button, except that a full TW5 document is constructed, complete with JavaScript).

So, if you're not seeing that behaviour, other possibilities might be that you have some kind of popup blocker that is preventing the new tab from opening, or another browser extension is interfering with TW.

One way to rule out those possibilities is to run Firefox with a new, clean profile without any extensions, as described here:

Does the URL shown in the browser address bar change?

No URL shown when the mouse is over the "Save Static" button.

I meant whether the URL in the browser address bar (not the status bar) changes after you click the "save static" button?

Ok, if you're seeing the same problem in both browsers, in both cases with no JavaScript errors shown, it suggests that you've got a virus checker or popup blocker that is interfering with both browsers.

Alternatively, there could be confusion about what is supposed to happen when you click "save static"; a new tab should open containing a data URI containing a static HTML representation of the currently displayed tiddlers.

The original behaviour that you described would be consistent with the new tab *replacing* the current one (because the links will not work in the static representation, which is what you reported). I can't think why it should open in the same tab, though.

Best wishes

TiddlyWiki5 uses an entirely different architecture for plugins. As a
result, existing TW plugins will not work in TiddlyWiki5, and will
have to be completely re-written to recreate their functionality in
the new system.

well, i've been playing but cant figure out loading or creating external tiddlers. I was hoping I could hijack the save mechanism, and make it work in ie9 and then make it create an external tiddler and modify an editable field on first edit of a new tiddler. Also save of that tiddler on hitting the done button. I've located the done function but not the edit and haven't figured out how to hijack. I realize now after I just wrote this that maybe I should be asking permission first before getting hack happy?

I'm getting a tiddler recursion error when trying to view the view template. I guess that shadow tiddler isn't viewable from an android phone? But I bet that is where I find the button for the edit function, right??

There is no user interface implemented yet for importing tiddlers, but
will be for the beta.

At the moment, you'd have to make the exploded version manually - the
tw5.com folder in the TiddlyWiki5 github repo could serve as a
starting point.

Search isn't implemented at all yet. I'd emphasise once again that TW5
is under development at the moment, and not yet completed. There's
enough there for interested people to get their teeth into and
explore, but there's still a lot to be done.

There's certainly no need to ask permission, just hack away.

I'm not sure if I fully understand what you're trying to do here. The
plugin mechanism isn't complete yet, and so it would be hard to write
a useful plugin at the moment for TW5.
