I'm in the market for a stripping basket for "running down the man" next month but I'm having a hard time finding reliable information online on the matter.  I see a number of different options from hard plastic bins to mesh and foam baskets but it seems all options fit for travel are major compromises in use.  The only option that looked very promising was the Mangrove Hipshooter that's no longer in production.  Ideally, I'd like to avoid packing a big plastic bin in my luggage.  Any suggestions from the group?  Thanks.

I've used both a collapsible mesh basket and the Orvis plastic bin with the cones in it. The collapsible mesh one, while convenient for travel, does not work very well. The Orvis one works great, but takes up a bit of space (not as bad as you think as you can stuff it full of fishing gear and other things you are going to pack). I travel with the Orvis one now. The collapsible one might work better with some stiff heavy mono, weed whacker line or zip ties in the bottom to keep the line from tangling, but then it would be as portable, unless you removed the zip ties every time you packed it (not that big of a deal - zip ties are cheap).

Here is a picture of a home made one where you can see they used zip ties. You can make one yourself with a small plastic dishwashing bin, an old wader belt, a drill and some zip ties or stiff heavy mono. You can even put a bend in it like the Orvis one if you have access to a heat gun.

What do the cones or zip ties do? I have never used a basket, but
entertained the idea especially fishing from a boat.

It helps keep the flyline from tying itself in knots while it lays in
the basket. They work.

They are completely invaluable if you ever fish from the surf. They are
also really handy on a boat and keep you from standing on your line or
getting it caught in some hardware.

I'm really starting to think that what I'm looking for doesn't exist.  I'm thinking of fabricating a plastic insert with a few zip ties for one of the shallower mesh options.  That way the basket would be semi-rigid and lay flat in a suitcase.  Off to home depot I guess.  Thanks.

Hey Brad,

I'm assumming its so important in the surf due to the excess line hanging out in the water and adding more drag.  You could have a harder time casting farther distances.  I have noticed a similar problem wet wading at Chainbridge (the current takes the line) and this could possibly be helpful there.  This would also assist with the line getting tangled in the rocks.
