I'm headed to Columbia (the country) for work and I'll have 2 days to fish. I'll be staying in the Caribbean coast beach town of Santa Marta. Any body have any experience fishing down there? I'm looking for an inshore guide and any tips anyone might have. Fly fishing would be preferred, but conventional tackle would be fine, too. Thanks,

Brad

brad, your best bet would be to go north to the small village of taganga, this is a fishing village and is located in a deep bay, most people there are fishermen, there are no guides the best thing to do is to get there ang see if you can get one of the local fishermen to take you around the bay, if you are going to fly fish take a #9 or # 10 fly rod with sinking line, baitfish patterns, there are red snappers and snook in the area north of the bay there are rocks , that would be your best place to start, if you are taking conventional tackle you can jig usin white 2 onz gigs towards the rocks ,or you can troll rapalas , make sure you take wire leaders and all your tackle ,there are NO fishing shops,to get a better idea of the place I am talking about, look it up on google earth, best regards

Not fly fishing related, but hiking around Tayrona is pretty excellent as well.  I was there earlier this year, and didn't get to fish, but shoot me an email if you want more info on the area.  Taganga is a weird spot, but definitely lots of small local fisherman that I'm sure you could get to bring you out.  One word of caution--get ready to get wet.  I took a boat from Tayrona to Taganga (45 mins) and its all huge breakers that leave you absolutely soaked.  Big waves, small boats is the norm there.

Sandy canceled my flight and broke my arm, so I never ended up going.

Ok...So I just need a little clarification.... Did Sandy break your arm or did that just happen as a coincidence?  If Sandy broke it, we have to hear the rest of that story.

She did. About noon on Sandy's arrival, I slipped and fell in the front yard of my house and broke my arm. I blame Sandy......

Hey Brad,

Sorry to hear that.  I would blame Sandy too.  Which arm and is it your primary arm (righty or lefty)?  I have to tell you that I never broken my own bones so I don't know if it's possible but maybe you can tie flies carefully in the mean time (holding material in your broken hand and wrap with your good hand) or possible try tying single handed.  That could be an interesting experiment to working on your dexterity.  Of course you could also work on your sampling the suggested Scotches from a previous post......... for the forum of course.

Just a couple thoughts and feel better,

Aaron O.

Thanks Aaron. It was my left arm which is my non-dominant arm. It really hasn't slowed me down. I tied two dozen saltwater flies on Sunday evening.

The cast comes off on Monday and I get fitted for a removable brace.

Good, quick recovery. If I caught you early enough I was going to tell you to have the doctor graft some stripping guards and a landing net onto your left arm, but it sounds like it's too late ;).

Next time though --
