Has anyone caught or seen snakehead feeding in a tidal flow such as Gravely Point? From the little understand they seem to be more up in vegetation than in current.
Just curious as I think about fishing on another cold day. Come on spring!

I was at Gravely last fall and a spincaster was trailoring his bass boat.  Started talking, and he shows me a 25 or 30 inch snakehead that he took off a crankbait not too far off the point (to the south I believe, towards the airport).  So not exactly in Gravely Point, but not too far off either.

BTW, landing one of these guys (and eating him) is one of my top goals this spring/summer.

There are plenty of Snakeheads in Roaches Run all summer long, so if nothing else, they at least come through Gravelly twice a year, I imagine.

Does anyone have any insight on where they spend the winter?

Roaches run is "the duck pond", right?

I can't speak to Gravelly specifically but on a few occurrences last spring I've seen some monsters rolling around in a strong tidal flow.  They'd typically roll on the surface with little disturbance.  It's also very common to see this around chain bridge in the spring.  I'm not sure what the behavior is, whether they are feeding, sipping air, or if it's just their way of flipping me the bird.  Still looking for my first on fly.

I saw a baby sh drifting around gravelly in 2011 with a pile of hydrilla. Only one I have ever seen there.

The two snakeheads i caught were in thick weedy cover in a shallow muddy area. I was fishing for bass with a top water frog on a bait caster. A goal of mine this year is to catch one on the fly i plan on targeting the same area with frog and mouse pattern flies.

I have witnessed the Occoquan snakehead event.  It is impressive.  That is where I hooked my first snakehead (a huge monster that I lost) and where I landed my first one.  They show up in April.  I intend to be out there this year trying to hook another one!

Mind sharing how you get back in there?

Not at all.

There are three places to put in with a kayak or canoe in the Occoquan.  The first is the easiest.  It is at the park but it is also the furthest paddle and it costs $5.

The next place, and the one I use the most, is under the 123 bridge.  There is a parking lot and you just load your kayak down the gravel.  It isn't too bad of a paddle but it is easier to load and it is free.  No one has ever given me any problems

The last place is under the foot bridge.  I use this from time to time, especially if the wind is blowing strong.  It is not as easy to load the kayak down the hill but I have been using this access more and more if I am fishing the back of the Occoquan because it is a much shorter paddle.  I also tend to fish the back of the river the most.

Last year I managed to catch two shad, a huge channel catfish, various other smaller catfish, a bunch of bass, bluegill, crappie, a snakehead, and a few stripers.  It is a good place to fish and I live very close.

Let me know if anyone wants to fish this area in the future.

I'm surprised nobody's tried tagging a few of them and released track
their behavior. If they eeareally are such an ecological threat,
wouldn't learning more about them justify letting some go?

I believe that they have tagged a few between VDGIF, Maryland, and Potomac River Fisheries commission.

There is a link confirming the tagged snakeheads.
