Hey fellas,

I've been itching for more trout in my weekends than the few times I've made it down to the Jackson and Holston this year. I've been looking at the Rapidan on here and it seems like a good bet when the air temp rises a bit. Can anyone give me a bit of direction on how to best access the good-fishing portions? Is there a mile marker I should lookout for on Skyline, or I access it from the east side/bottom? Also, if I do go in from the WMA side, will my Prius make it in there, or should I take the truck? Obviously, I prefer the Prius for cost-effectiveness.

I go to Banco,VA take Quaker Run road to the end, then continue up the gravel road  to the end.  At the end is a gate that marks the boundary of the Shenandoah National park.  If you hiked from that point you could walk to Hoover's Trout Camp.  Plenty of good river access and parking areas along the entire trip.  I have seen regular cars make the trip.  Go very slow.  You would be better off with the Truck.  Good place to fish with a partner

I came in up from the bottom when I did a guided trip, but not particularly sure what road since my guide drove. You can use a regular car (saw some up there), but I really have no idea how they got there without ripping out their oil pans. I'd just take the truck to be safe. The roads will depend on how bad the winter was up there, plus when they re-grade it. The guide (who was a backcountry ranger for that area) said it'll either be early this or next spring when they do it based on the current conditions.

Anywhere above the 2nd bridge up until the SNP sign.  Hoovers camp has fish, but the water just gets so small up there.  Just be sure to have plenty Princes and zebra midges.  And a truck is almost a must.  Ive had my subaru out there and it was a little on the small side as a few rocks scraped the undercarriage.  Hope you have some good luck.

While a truck or high clearance vehicle is nice when going up that road.  It is not always necessary.  I was up there last spring and witnessed a BMW drive up the hill into one of the upper parking lots.  If a BMW can do it, I would image that most passenger cars can as well if the driver is careful to avoid the larger obstacles.

If you are heading down towards the Madison area, look up a stream called the Conway.  It has native brown and brook trout.  It isn't fished as heavily as the Rapidan and it has good access in most areas (you can definitely get a car there).  That is one of my favorite trout streams because of the brown trout in it.

Reigniting the native/wild argument:

 

·         A wild fish is a fish that was born in the wild and spends its life cycle in the wild, regardless of the origin of its parents or ancestors.

·         A native fish is a fish that was found here originally, prior to human influences.

 

A wild brown trout is not native to Virginia.  A brook trout in Accotink Creek is a native Virginia trout (even if it came from a hatchery).  A brook trout born in the Conway is a wild, native trout.

That was from the Conway.  I have never heard of anyone catching a brown in the Rapidan.

Looking at the WMA map of Rapidan, is the best way to fish the Conway just right off 667?

I was in Shenandoah National Park over the weekend, mostly hiking but a little fishing. With the water this cold, fishing is very slow. Good luck if you go.

The weekend I went down there, we had a lot of rain just prior and everything was blown out. We ended up finding some better fishing on the streams along Rte 678.

Made it over to the Conway yesterday. Slow day fishing (1230-3PM), landing one 5in brookie. Beautiful stream. Water temps were low. Any day outside is a good day.
