Hey all - I was wondering if anyone has (or has experience with) a jet drive that they put in at Riverbend or other up river locations including the Shenandoah.  I have been thinking of getting one for years, particularly the G3 tunnel hull but won't even consider it if I can't use it in these locations.  I would love to hear people's experiences!

Thanks in advance!

I have fished a lot around Riverbend.  Some by kayak.  I have paddled as far as I could up river until I got to an area with about a 12" fall. I would have had to portage around this with the Kayak.

You could probably get the jet driver about that far but no further.

The rivers in Virginia, especially during the summer, have just enough flow to go down them with a canoe or kayak but you end up bumping bottom a lot.  I don't think that the jet boat could go through a lot of these areas.

I live close to algonkian park and I've seen jet skis, but not any boats bigger than bass boats. The water might be too shallow for anything bigger.

Hi,   I understand  "different strokes for different folks" or different boats for different folks, however, there was a guy with a fan boat at Algonquin park this past summer while I was out in my quiet kayak and it was the worst noise.  I felt like I was fishing on the runway at Dulles or National.  Not a pleseant day of fishing at all.

The motor boat of choice for the Potomac and Shenandoah is a Jet drive boat preferably with tunnel. If you visit the RiverSmallies.com site, you can read up on it. You would be surprised the range that you have with one of those....on the Potomac, from Algonkian up. Sure, there are places that you cannot access but that is the minority.

I would think a jet motor would be the only thing safe to take on certain sections of the Potomac.  A buddy of mine has one on the Delaware river north of Philly and it works out great.  I was surprised how little water we needed to get through and it also handled going up small class I and II rapids with ease. You would not want to take it out in say a shallow bay on the lower Potomac with mud bottom.  Mud leaves and aquatic vegetation will clog the motor and you will have to jump out and unclog it to get going again.  If you just intend to use it in rocky areas that would be the way to go.
