I went to Four Mile Run from 10:00 to 12:30 today.  There was a cold breeze blowing across the water!

I was using a bead head shit nymph on a size 8 hook (recipe another member posted).  I had a strike indicator about 6 feet up the leader from the fly.

My first notion was to dead drift the nymph and watch the strike indicator.  That yielded nothing.

The second thing I tried was slowly working the nymph and watching the strike indicator.  I managed to hook 6 bluegill by doing this.

There was a lot of activity from larger fish in the area.  I believe that these are carp of some sort.  They were breaking the water and rolling.  I was really trying to catch one of these as I have never hooked a carp.  No such luck.

Most of the rolling fish appeared to be at a 45 degree angle from where I entered the water (the Route 1 bridge area near the Toyota dealership.  I was casting towards the power poles that are in the water (towards the activity).  The water was flowing and decently clear.

Am I doing the right things or is there another technique I need to use?

I guess that would be the proper fly to "match the hatch" when fishing a waste water output?  If you can reach them, the power poles themselves can be productive.  I was out there a few weeks ago and found a school of crappie on the north shore pole.  Other than than, I usually just fish the banks and bridges.  With the sun today and depending on the tides, I would expect to find em in the shallow warmer water midday to afternoon.

Today, 12-20-12 I went back to four mile run.  I caught two blue gill and that was it!

I noticed that the carp didn't seem to be surfacing as much as they were the other day.  Probably the cooler weather or the front that seems to be passing through tonight.

I am still wondering how you all are catching carp on the fly.  I have the strike indicator about 6 feet from my bead head nymph.  I am fishing the nymph slowly.  Is this the right technique?
