I have an Olympus Stylus Touch 6000. I like it a lot. Water proof,
Shock proof, it's small and good resolution.

I too have an Olympus. Its the Stylus 1050. The real reason I got it was it was new and $130 on Ebay (shipped overnight from the Wynn Casino in Vegas, rather sketchy but that is Ebay).

It is also shock proof and waterproof. The pictures tend to be overexposed all the time. I have tried every setting and the only one that seems to take a decent picture is the underwater function, even when not underwater.

The camera takes a good 10 seconds to start up once you turn it on. So there is no chance of getting that candid moment or a picture of some quick moving object or funny moment. The battery lasts a long time and it can take a beating. I only use it when wet wading. Other than that its not worth the overesposed pictures. I've tried to play with the  exposure meetering etc. I used to have a Cannon Powershot that took phenomenal pictures on any setting. I wish that was in the waterproof model.

I thought I had lost the camera after a trip out west. I was about to start researching a new camera to replace. I was quite disappointed when I found my camera in the bottom of a pair of boots :(

Take a look at a recent review by the folks at Moldy Chum http://www.moldychum.com/home-old/tag/digital-camera-reviews

Last note, be sure to have it on a lanyard of some sorts attached to you. I had one digi camera stolen out of my pocket at Madison Square Garden when someone pulled the lanyard hanging out of my pocket. The next camera was dropped in the Yellow Breeches by my friend. The Cannon above took a bath when I got hit by a wave in my kayak. I've had bad luck with cameras.

I have been a huge fan of the Olympus cameras over the years and have gone through a few of them... Now I'm on the Olympus Tough tg-820... It's the newest and most advanced... They toned back the megapixels to 12, but the features and quality of the photos are amazing....it is the best one yet and the first time I have been completely happy with one... The best part is that it is super fast, unlike the older Olympus models which are kinda slow.... Biggest piece if advice... Get it at best buy and get the three year protection plan... When I was living in Hawaii I literally went through 5 of then for free

I have the Panasonic lumix DMC-TS3. It takes good pictures in most situations and the underwater pictures are decent, but low light is not great. The menu is pretty easy to navigate, I've taken it snorkeling, wading and use it as an all around point and shoot. Most of the pictures ive posted on here are from it. When purchasing I read a lot of reviews on amazon and decided on this one. One of the major drawbacks with the touch screen cameras was that the functionality was useless when wet, which was why I went with the Panasonic.

I completely agree with rob about the lanyard, if you are taking it wading or to the beach buy a chums floating lanyard, the cameras are waterproof and shock proof, but they sink like stones without one.

On a somewhat related issue, I was thinking about getting an entry level dslr camera, any advice/ recommendations would be appreciated.

Justin,

A bit of a different approach, but I use two GoPros to record my exploits.  I keep a Hero2 in video mode and an older 960 in continuous picture mode.  Even at 960p resolution the older model takes decent enough pictures for me.   The Hero2 also has a crisp enough resolution to take some pretty good stills from the video.  Extremely durable, wearable/mountable, completely waterproof.  Definitely not for every application, but I found I was able to get the fish back in the water much faster with the small cams strapped to my chest or mounted on my kayak.  Here's a few recent photos, all with the lower resolution cam.

Any of Fuji XP series will work well, great pictures, fast shutter, reasonably priced. Waterproof and shockproof, with GPS features ( for location tags on pics).

Only problem that I have is with battery life when GPS feature is turned on all of the time.

I have the Pentax Optio and I'm very happy with it. Different modes are useful (panoramic, low light, macro) and it has video capability.  It's foos under water.  It was less than $150.  I use it as my sole non-iPhone camera.

Cheers,

I've had an Olympus and a Panasonic Lumix. I completely prefer the Panasonic Lumix. Better lense, faster focus and operation. Big fan!

I have had a couple of the Olympus cameras and right now I'm on the Tough 8000.  It is rugged, and it's a beast.  I have a lanyard for mine as well.  My complaint is that it starts up VERY slowly.  I took it to a camera shop and they we able to reduce the startup time by about half, so now it's only at about 5 seconds.  I usually just leave it in powersave mode, and that way the startup time is cut to a few seconds.  It take great pictures for me but then again, I'm not really a great photographer.  I also have the GoPro Hero 1080p.  I've used that extensively for scuba, white water rafting (lost one in the Gauley River), etc.  They are pretty crazy.  I'm kind of hoping to lose this one too somehow so I can get the Hero 2.

On an interesting note, take some pictures of you wearing your GoPro, and if you happen to lose it, email their customer service.  I was able to get 50% off my replacement.  You will also need your receipt.

Hope that helps.  I'm very curious about the TG-820 though.  Will have to check into that (and others) more.
