Average first bite

I just spoke with Gordon Leisch. He is a former marine biologist and VERY long time Potomac fall line angler.  His logs go back 50 + years. We averaged the date of the first bite for a few species.  Based on his records they are as follows.

Blue Catfish              Year Round  20 - 40 pounders being caught now on the sandbar

Gizzard Shad            March 1 in numbers but always around

White Perch              March 15th

H Shad                      March 30th

River Herring              March 30th

Striped Bass (big)      April 1st

Snakeheads              Insufficient data  Usually around the 1st of April with a high water event

A Shad                     April 15th

Sorry, I had to do some moderation and delete something personal from Dan Davala's post, but here is what Dan wrote:

I suppose this would be a good time to repost THIS THREAD.  Thanks again Mike for this classic post.  Additionally, last year Mike put together THIS INCREDIBLE MAP which not only shows great locations by name, but tells the history of many.  The upper part of the side bar is where he puts current and almost daily reports during the run.  The map can also be found quickly on our LINKS PAGE.

Thanks Dalton.  To clarify, my post contained nothing personal, but another member accidentally replied to the club on this thread instead contacting the author directly as he intended, and that post contained personal contact info.  We moderated/edited the post at the author's request.   

 

While there is a "reply to author" option available at the TPFR Forum Page with which one can send a message directly to an individual poster, this is a good reminder to be sure only the author is listed in the heading before hitting send.  Alternatively, if you are set up to receive all posts to your inbox, it is easy to copy the authors listed email address from the post and send them a personal message that way via personal email.
