Hello all
I was wondering if the public stretch of mossy creek and beaver creak are worth trying. The research that I did on both turned up good but it was on private waters where only guides can get you there. I also understand beaver creek is by pass only at the local country store. I wish I could afford a guide to show me the ropes around hear but financed leave to a do it yourself type. Since I am new to Virginia and started fly fishing in colorado I am partial to trout fishing. Is it worth me taking the 2.5 hour drive to go to the public sections? Your input would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

Can't comment on those waters, but might be worth giving Accotink a try, if only because of how close it is.  Only been out there once, and water was too high to have much luck, but its really nice out there.  Search "accotink" on the forum and you'll see a bunch reports, as well as some pretty great pictures from a few folks.

I haven't read much more than you have most likely, and if you've fished for trout out west you absolutely have more experience than me.  I did make it out to Mossy (public) this last summer and I pretty much found what others have - the fishing is tough, but it's kind of a cool stream and there are definitely big trout in there.  One really nice one rose to one of Beth's huge streamers once, but didn't come up a second time ;).  We both caught a few of the smaller, dumber stockie browns on a woolly bugger (estaz) and a couple of little foam ant/beetle things.

Just do a search for "mossy" in the search box above and you'll get some good advice from other folks on here.  Good luck to you!  I like trout, but I'm more of a warm water fisherman at heart.  Fast-flowing water confuses me ;).

It's very worth the trip, especially this time of year because it's a spring creek. Big rainbows and browns. Don't let the "public section" designation deter you from checking it out, the largest brown ever caught on the creek (27" monster with a 2" kype-jaw) was from a pool in that stretch. I'd suggest trying to get out there on a weekday, it gets crowded on weekends. But the colder the weather/crappier the weather, the better the fishing it is there in my experience and the less anglers. Hit me up for more info. I'm always down to make a day trip there.

I like Mossy Creek. And, yes, it is a challenging stretch of water. Mostly because of the pressure the fish get.......they've seen most anything you'll throw at least once.  But tough streams help you become a better caster and a better fisherman.  If you can figure out what is best to throw, then present it in a way that gets the fish to take, all on a tough stream, it makes you a better fisherman.  Mossy is definitely worth a trip.

You may also consider travelling a little farther to Buffalo Creek.  It, like Mossy, requires the same kind of landowner permission that Mossy does, which you can now get online (https://www3.dgif.virginia.gov/troutpermits/). It's a little different than Mossy in that a good section of it flows through what you would consider "mountain stream" conditions. Last time I went there I caught 20 fish, mostly rainbows, on pheasant tail, caddis, and copper johns.

Both streams are fun.

Thank you for the info. I as well would be down to do a day trip. When ever I have a free day I will shoot you a email. I always like to fish with some one new because I can learn from them and vice versa.
Thanks
Mike
