Being new to fly fishing I have a basic question.  I noticed with my 5wt rod, that I had trouble loading it into the wind.  It seemed my loop fell apart and I could not really feel the rod load when back casting with the find in my face.  I know that sounds counter-intuitive because the backcast with breeze in my face should have helped load the rod.

Either way, my forward cast had no power so I was wondering:
1) bad technique
2) bad rod (beginner rod)
3) combination of the two

Any insight welcomed from the more seasons anglers.

Thanks.

*heading to CO this week for work fitting in some trout fishing outside Denver and very excited.

What kind of rod is it - mid or tip flex?  Beginner rods are not necessarily bad rods...  I always have more trouble casting my 5wt full flex when there is any wind - but with the same conditions, I can make decent casts with a 5wt tip flex.

When I was at your stage, I cheated and over weighted the rod (I used the next higher weight line) - made it easier to keep my loop shape in winds.

To be honest with you the best way to fix your casting issue would be to attend the casting class Sunday morning at Fletchers Boat house.  You will get more out of that than all the reading on casting you could do.

When do you plan on going to colorado? I just moved from there, I can give you some good insights on some spots and fly shops. Just let me know.
