Hi,

I am just shooting out a notice that John Bilotta (Master Certified Casting Instructor) and I will be holding a casting clinic at Fletcher's Cove on Sunday, March 3 from 8:30-10:00. We will help out with both single-hand and two-handed casting (John will probably have some spare spey rods if you want to give this a go). If there is anything you want to work on or just want to tune up your general skills, we will help out.

Additionally, we have added a few additional events to our webpage here: http://www.tpfr.org/events.htm

On the following Sunday, March 10, we will have a table at the NCC-TU Angling Show at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda. Lefty Kreh will be there doing a casting demonstration, there will be lots of guides, local vendors and other local fishing non-profits. For more details, go here.

Also, as Dan has sent out recently we have several more Beer Tie's and our four year anniversary party scheduled at Whitlow's.

Do I need to purchase any special license our anything for this?

As far as I know, no license is required to cast in the grass, but it may not be a bad idea to drop $13 on a DC license anyway. Fletcher's sells them but I don't know what the boat house hours are this time of year, and they're also available online here: https://enode.dc.gov/epermit/Page/Entry/Login.aspx

"Angling" refers to the use of an "angle" (hook) with the intent to "take" fish.  Since you are not casting with a hook on the end of your line, the criterion of "angling" is not met because they're is no real way to "take" anything.  I asked this very question to the Delaware people because I was thinking about casting in the Cape Henlopen park area for practice when I was down there.

If someone stops you from casting a fly rod on the lawn with a piece of yarn on the end of your line and asks for a fishing license, he/she is an idiot.  For good measure, I wouldn't put myself in the position of casting in the actual water without a proper license.  Of course buying the license and being done with it is an easy way to go.

I work for a conservation group in DC (TRCP), and am planning to head out with one of our staff members from Oregon who will be in town. Besides conservation, Mia Sheppard is a steelhead guide, and TH casting enthusiast. Look forward to Sunday!

While it is free, Dan neglected to mention the wandering "boathouse gang" that is sometimes known for jacking people as they pass through that stone tunnel under the canal.

They usually wear sunglasses, a ball cap, and loose-fitting clothing in the spring/summer.  They may even be carrying fishing rods or kayaks and appear pretty friendly.  Sometimes they might even say things like "beautiful day isn't it?" or "how you doing?" but don't be panic.  Just give your car a lot of gas and never stop in the tunnel!  You'll be fine ;).

Hey guys,

I am planning on attending, and was going to bike there as I don't own a car. But then I thought I would check to see if anyone is going to be driving from the Dupont area and doesn't mind a passenger?

Thanks,

I live in Dupont and I am hoping to go. I'd be happy to give you a ride.

Unfortunately, I won't know if I can make it until Saturday afternoon. I'll let you know.

Hope to see a bunch of you Sunday bright and early.

We are going to try to make this a bit more organized than usual with specific "stations" for different skills. John Bilotta/Mia Sheppard will be working with two-handed rods, Andy Manley will be working on roll casting, Lang White will handle distance casting and I will work with you on short/accuracy casts. Find us and work through the rotation or whatever you feel you need the most work on. Bring a rod and floating line if you have one but I will have a few extra Orvis rods (thanks Dan) if you or your companion don't.

As mentioned here, and another thread, Mia Sheppard, famed spey caster and steelhead guide will be in attendance.

Thanks,
Dalton

Is there a "Newbie" station for a complete newbie like me?  I was hoping to start here so I don't develop any bad habits.  Maybe Andy's roll casting clinic?

Thanks.

Leon.

P.S.  I promise to clip the hook off my wooly bugger so I don't snag anyone.

Sure Leon - everyone is welcome at these.  That's one of the best parts of the group.  You have to learn at some point, and it helps to have people watch your cast to give you tips.

I went to one of these last summer and Carl and John helped me a LOT, gave me ideas about how to practice alone, etc.

Yes go see Andy and Dalton, both can help.

And if you can,  tie on a small piece of yarn on your leader instead of a fly, if you don't have any we will bring extra, also bring sometype  of glasses.

Are you going to be wading in water, or standing in parking lot for casting  ie.  do I need to bring my waders.   thanks

This was going to be my next question. I'm going to get a DC fishing license tomorrow just for a little CYA insurance. I want to bring my single hand and switch with me. I am decent with my single hand but am looking forward to the stations though. Since spey/ switch casting requires water tension, should I bring my waders? Is the parking lot close to where everyone will be (I've obviously never been to this place)?

There are two parking lots--one before the tunnel, the other through the tunnel and down and around.  You'll know what I'm talking about when you get there.  You want to go through the tunnel, around, and park in the lower parking lot (its right by the water).

I would bring waders, not sure you can spey or roll cast without them here.  There's a good long sandbar to stand on.

Look for my green suburban. You don't have to bring waders but if you want to cast along the river they or tall rubber boots are helpful.  The stations will be mostly up on the grass, Depending on how crowded we are.

Thanks so much for putting on this event!  John, Carl, thanks for getting me started.  It really came together when John had me "paint" the other side of the Potomac, it really was beautiful to see the rod and line working together so smoothly.
