I am wondering if anyone is going after Shad this weekend and, if so, how they did.

I am also wondering if anyone is seeing any snakehead yet.  They should start moving around soon.  I am thinking about targeting them soon in the back of the Occoquan.

I have not been out yet but a couple of friends went out yesterday at Fletcher's and had some good luck. They said green Tommy's torpedoes were working well.

I went Friday for about 3 hours and caught 2.    Water was cold and it was really windy.

Are the Americans in or are you just catching Hickory Shad?

I am tempted to hit the Rappahannock in the next few days..

Just spent a couple hours at chain bridge and got skunked. There were several spin fisherman in the area that also got skunked. Lots of birds hunting.

Got a few between 1PM and 2PM - upstream from Fletcher's after giving a lesson today.  The bite is definitely soft and the fight is pretty lethargic compared to what it will be once the water temp gets into the 50's.  Fish were deep too.  I fished an Intermediate Skagit head with  15' type 8 tip and counted it down 25 seconds into a seam.  Short strips were good, though a bit slower tempo than normal.

Spent a few hours out today, though more casting lesson than actually fishing.  Got skunked...

Well I was out yesterday and caught 3 hickories around noon, had 2 more come off near the boat... one of which was a very large fish.

I held down Walker's for a few hours Saturday morning while I worked out a few early season kinks.  Had a few hits but brought none to shore.  The guys on the boats seemed to be faring well around 9-10am or so.  One guy on spin just downstream of the point had a dozen+ to hand in a few hours, looked to be all the typical sized hickories.  A guy on fly just up from the point had a few as well.  I was not getting down quite as far as I needed to be with 11ft of T-11, pretty deep off that point.  Still a few more kinks to work out.

Went down to Chain Bridge last night after work and saw probably 20 snakeheads cruising up-river along the rocks over the span of two hours.  I was DC side under and just down river from the bridge.  I put just about every bass fly I had in front of them and couldn't get one to bite.  I hate to say it but I even tried to fowl hook a few only to find a few scales on the hook.

What's the deal with them when spawning, do they not want to eat?

Now that I think of it, I saw this guy (attached photo) last year around this time walking down the canal. Clearly he was doing something right.

Doesn't take much effort to snag one or net one this time of year up there.

I've gutted over a dozen snakeheads up there during the spring. Every one was a female full of eggs and each one had an empty stomach (maybe they just digest things super quickly, I don't know). They don't appear to be eating, just spawning. Some of them were jumping 2-3 feet out of the water on Monday am. Some were tail walking 10-15 feet laterally. It was awesome.

I'm seeing pictures online of snakeheads eating crank baits down river. As for upstream, I won't believe they eat until I see it. They won't bite out of aggravation either.

Loads of snagers and netters last night. One guy with a weighted treble hook got 3 beasts in about 1 min.

Didn't see any fish killed before taking them from river. All were put in trash bags. Hope they were not going to be stocked another waterway.

It was a very entertaining show.

Snagging isn't legal right?  I know the net isn't, so I can't imagine that snagging is.  It appears to be illegal based on what I'm reading --

It sounds like bow fishing for snakehead, carp and gar are all legal.  We actually have a bow set up for bow fishing in storage....just haven't used it in VA yet.

Haha what!?  You can use poison arrows!?

So does that mean spearing is allowed for taking snakeheads?

There was a guy with a spear last night. US Park Police say rod and reel only for snakeheads around chain bridge. But that's when they patrolled back in the day.

What about ATLATLS?  Very similar physics to a fly cast, perhaps more effective for non-feeding NSH.  I don't see Atlatl(s) listed anywhere in the regulations - fair game?

TONS of folks netting and snagging snakeheads at chain bridge tonight.  Almost grabbed a monster myself with my guide net that came up close to me.

Managed 6 shad, I think 2 were American.  I think of 40+ folks down there, I was the only one chasing shad

Mad snakeheads at chain. Made friends with some of the netters who had
no idea what to do with a beast they netted so I took that sucker home
and grilled him up.

Shad were laying really deep. Caught 5 - 3 hickory/ 2 american. Hooked
a channel cat by the tale on accident it was crazy.

Has anyone had luck getting any snakeheads to bite?

Bouncing a myriad of flies off their noses all morning. They could care less.

Watching them is awesome. One was biggest I've seen. Looked like a gator coming up for air.

Go to the DC side, just upstream of the bridge supports, and you'll see dozens of them, all the way up the shoreline.  Look for splashing, sipping, and slow rises.  In the slow water they are easier to see, but just as much splashing in the current.  That's just where I was, but the dozens of folks with long nets on the VA side probably indicate the same thing is going on there.

Really cool to see, so many huge fish with so little concern for what is going on around them.  I guess that's what happens when you don't have any natural predators (beyond folks with nets and snag hooks).
