Hey All!

I'm going to North Myrtle for a week the second week of April and would love to get some fishing in while I'm there.  Going out with a guide doesn't fit in the budget, but I'd love to head out to a few places I can get to on my own (no boat).

I'll have an 8 wt rod with me, have a collection of clousers and some other deceiver patterns.  I'll have time to do some tying before heading down there, so any fly recommendations are welcome!

Any and all advice is much appreciated!

You should go to tomorrow morning's tying session at Urban Angler (10 am) to learn to tie the Crazy Charlie and the Gotcha.

Seems like those would be good patterns for that area.

Oh man, I would love to but I'm stuck working tomorrow.  Thanks for the recommendations though, I'll try to find some videos online to follow.

Paul,

Since you're going DIY, give Dan Guy a call at our Myrtle Beach Orvis shop.  He's a great dude and can give you a lot of good info on the area you'll be staying.  His number - (843)-839-6900.  I just chatted with him so I know he's in today.

That area is lots of redfish, specks, etc. It'll be tough to hit without a boat, but doable with local information. If at all possible, I'd see if you can rent a kayak as a lower cost option. It'll increase your chance of success significantly.

Hey Scott,

Never been to Urban Anglers tying sessions.  Should I call ahead and should I bring anything with me?

I've never been either. But here's what their website has to say about it:

Every other Saturday morning from 10:00 am until noon. Bring in your vise and tying tools, and tie along with us.

Learn tips, tricks, and the special techniques for tying amazing flies that will help you catch more fish.

Space is limited, so arrive early and have fun. Tie one on!

Dan - call 'Dan' in Myrtle Beach?

Dan, it's really you on the other end with a surfer accent, isn't it?  ;)

Oh, and I'll be at urban this morning for the tie -- looks interesting and I love the shop and the folks -- I never need an excuse to go in there.  Great place ;).

Aaron - what's this "call ahead" you mention?  You're in DC!  I sold my manners on craigslist right after we moved here.

You should also try to knock over kids and the elderly on the metro escalators when they block your path to the platform....even when no train is there.  If you're on the left side and you're not walking, your ass is fair game!  ;)
