Fly fishing the Keys

Took a long weekend with the wife a few weeks back to Marathon to visit some friends and get a real taste of saltwater fly fishing.  Wind kept us from fishing the majority of the trip, but we felt really blessed with the 2 days worth of fishing that we got.  We were really hoping for some tarpon and managed to hook 3 and land 1, along with many good-sized jacks (up to 9 lbs) and barracudas.  After growing up in Ohio and Oklahoma respectively, our minds were blown with the saltwater fly fishing.  For example, the day we fished at the 7-mile bridge, there was about a 2-hr window where everything seemed to be happening at once -- schools of jacks lined up behind a school of tarpon off the bow, huge sea turtles surfacing off the stern, sharks off the starboard side -- our heads were on a swivel! It. was. awesome.

On our way back to Miami, we stopped by Robbie's Marina in Islamorada to get our adrenaline pumping and some close-up shots of tarpon feeding. Definitely recommend that pit stop for those that haven't been.

I noticed on your blog ya'll did some fishing up on Moomaw and the Jackson river, I actually live about 20 miles from there. It's a beautiful place to fish in the area up there. There are plenty of stocked streams around to keep you busy fishing. Next time ya'll are up that way stop in Douthat state park if you have time it's great fishing there too.
