Planning on heading to Mossy this Saturday, along with a friend that has never fly fished before in his life.  Worried that I may be having him jump off the deep end starting his FF career at Mossy, and looking for some good alternatives nearby, in case we need a plan B.  Anybody have any recommendations other than Beaver Creek (which I am guessing will be all booked before I get there)?

Ive fished beaver. Its good. Not as scenic as mossy, its in cow fields.  Plenty of back cast room. Over the summer those passes were bot empty till 9am. But im not sure about now. Personaly if you park at the school, do not fish the stream above that school or below the bridge.

I've found mossy very technical and frustrating (lose lots of flies in the vegetation) and almost all I fish is extremely heavy cover on tight streams. I would check out the Jackson just one county over in Alleghany and Bath counties. It is much less technical and much easier to get a good bite... not to mention very wadeable with plenty of room for a back cast.

The jackson just has a lot of land owner issues. If anyone understands these please elaborate. I have had trouble down there when floating the river.

Gaucho,

Dry River in GW National Forest is a very good brook trout stream not too far from Mossy near Harrisonburg.  The water is clear and the brookies will spook if not careful, but it can be easier fishing than Mossy.  Plenty of access is off of rt 33. Make sure you have National Forest permits in addition to your freshwater/trout licenses.

I wouldn't necessarily shy away from mossy. Tie on a #8 green crystal flash woolly bugger and keep moving. You should have some luck!

Thanks everyone.  From the reports I have heard, Mossy is fishing great, and Dry Creek is a good back-up.  Thanks for all the advice!

Don't float the Jackson. It is one of my go-to trout rivers and I fish it 10-12 times/year. The key is use public access areas and wade within a reasonable distance. Below the dam, Indian Draft, Smith Bridge, Hidden Valley, etc. There are over 18 miles of public water full of trout compared to just 2-3 miles of private king's land grant water. The best fish are had at Hidden Valley and the dam tailwaters. I've caught dozens of fish in the 18-24" range in both places. Small fish can be had at the Indian draft section. Between Smith Bridge and Indian Draft is the area in most dispute, so if you fish at either access point, go up stream and downstream respectively. There is quite a bit of public water between them, so wade until you see signs and then turn around. Not too hard. Also, almost everywhere but the on-river neighborhood developments will give you access if you just ask nicely. At all access points, there is a map with the off-limits sections in yellow so it's really an easily avoidable problem.

Also good is Back Creek. Camp out at the camping ground for the weekend and have fun. There are some 30"+ monsters hanging around in there.
