Like most folks in DC, I don't have a lot of extra space at home for hobbies.  I wanted to find a small fly tying station that could be stored in a closet.  There are a lot of nice options online, but I didn't want to break the bank.  I'm very new to tying and trying to keep the total cost of this new hobby down.  With only a few hand tools and a couple of cheap cuts of wood, I was able to put together a pretty nice fly tying station.  It's my ideal kind of wood project: lot's of tinkering, few plans.  Here's a few pictures of the process and finished product.

Todd,

Nice tying desk. I've had the need for a tying desk like that, but
yours looks practical and gives me some ideas.

If you google around (image search, too).  You can find all kinds of ideas for customizing and setting up your station.  Fortunately, this is a sport where everyone likes to tinker on stuff, so there's a fair amount of information available.

Thanks for sharing Todd - I've been inspired to head to the hardware store and do some tinkering too!

What you have made is very, very awesome. Needs stickers.=)

Some other tricks:
You can get magnetic strips and sheets at craft stores. They work
swimmingly as hook/fly holders.

A ruler of some sort and a hook/hackle gauge are good things to put on
the flat deck of the station.

You can get velcro tabs at craft and home supply stores. Then you can
velcro tools, bead boxes, etc to the station.

Add a "teacup hook" for making dubbing brushes and leaders.

Very nice.  When you do have the room and when your flytying jones is in full bloom, you can ogle these, http://bit.ly/RkXfkL, from Hatches magazine's "Show Us Your Bench" feature.   ;-)
