I am thinking of getting a chest pack to replace my vest, which can get a bit hot in the summer, especially if I am also wearing waders.  Any advice?  I have heard that chest packs can really make your neck sore.  If you have one that works well and is pretty comfortable after a day standing in the water, I'd love to hear about it.

I can't give any input on chest packs, as I've only used sling packs, back packs and vests/jackets. But there was a lot of discussion on sling packs and chest packs a few months back, which may be helpful, check this thread: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/tidal-potomac-fly-rodders/sling$20pack/tidal-potomac-fly-rodders/qLekqLl0qMc/PGS47VzbTooJ

One thing I haven't liked about a chest pack is not being able to see where I'm putting my feet when the wading or rock scrambling gets tricky.  I'm planning to use a lumbar pack this summer to keep the heat off my back, although I know it will limit the depth of wading.

Cheers,

I own one of these chest packs from Hill people gear:http://www.hillpeoplegear.com/Products/tabid/762/categoryid/9/Default.aspx

He makes them in a few sizes. Great guy, good customer service. I will be buying another in the coming weeks.

Tried to post a pic but it failed. See if you can see this one: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=3015844875017&set=t.12700128&type=3&theater

I like my Safe Passage sling pack from Orvis, but holding a water bottle can post a problem. So far, the best solution I've found was a freebie sport top bottle from a work event that is short a wide, so it sits down along the fat side of the pack. Before the digi camo sling pack, I had an Orvis Safe Passage Magnum sling pack, but I could never get the straps to sit right - they always kinked and bent at awkward angles. My mother now uses it to carry a small Guerrilla Box for plein air painting. She doesn't have a problem with it, so maybe it was just user error.

On another note, Nathan, I have a Safe Passages Tri-Pack (older model than what's currently offered) you could borrow to see how you like having big fly boxes on your chest. Each chest pocket will fit a Bugger Barn with plenty of room to spare.

I use to carry a vest. Now i just have a necklace for clippers, tippets, forceps and a few other small things. Personaly i have plenty of room for storage just buy wearing one of those breathable shirts and a nice rain coat.  Orvis, patagonia and many others make many of them.

As an aside, can someone tell me what the velcro (loop side only) strip is for on the top of the outer compartment on the SP sling pack? Still haven't figured that one out yet.

You can Velcro a fly drying patch to it.

Lots of people like the umpqua bags out there. Take a look at those.

Come on Cave, you know the rules - no commercial links.

Here is another reminder to all to please read and respect the rules as listed HERE.

Thanks everyone for the comments. This helps. My birthday is coming up and I want to know what to ask for.

I got my hands on a Vestpac system. Its a very well thought out product. It has a hydration/bladder system as a backpack. The front is made of neoprene. It has 3 built in retractors, a Velcro on fly drying patch, a Velcro on fly box, and another retractor for tools. I'm going to try it out in FredVegas this weekend for stripers by the Rte 1 Bridge.

GS: I use a lumbar pack (is that like a thing-a-ma-fanny pack?) and it won't stop you from wading deep!

There's a trick -- when you get done fishing, unzip the fanny pack and invert it until all the water dumps out, then you set up a shot fan at home to dry your fishing licenses and half a granola bar.  It has worked great for me for nearly every trip I've taken in the last 6 months.

Check out the orvis gale force gear for added protection from the water.

Rob: I was thinking of heading down to the Rap for striper early Saturday myself, given the kids event at Fletchers. Any advice?

Two options: fish the moving fish below the bridge that are chasin bait and moving upstream or fish the holding fish above the bridge at the fall line. Either way its a short walk to both.

I'm just hoping I get a chance for lunch at Goolricks. The oldest working soda jerk fountain in the country!

This will be my 14th anniv weekend of catching my first striper on a fly down there. Life changing moment.
