While we wait for the river to clear and the stripers to show, what might your favorite Scotch whiskey be before, during or after fly fishing?

One vote for Talisker.

John --

Excellent thread topic.

I'm a big fan of Laphroaig, which im drinking right now, but when i want something less smoky & peaty, I also like The Macallan.

Cheers,

Well, yes that is a fine Scottish whiskey. But it doesn't beat a great
Irish - Black Bush - or a great Kentucky - Bowden's. But it is a fine
whiskey.

Its not quite a single malt. But does anyone have any suggestions for a Guinness like beverage? Just trying to mix it up a smidge.

What a great post! And cheers to RSW for the buffalo trace mention.

A bit of a bourbon man myself, and nothing beats Bookers. But I'll never turn down Paddy's Irish whiskey.

For a Guiness alternative, try Murphys Irish Stout. Great smokey taste.

Also when talking Scottish, we should probably use "whisky"--unless of course you've had a couple and then no one's complaining.

Excellent topic! Two of my favorite come from Ireland: Powers and Middleton, though they're nearly on opposite ends of the price spectrum.

From this side of the pond, my go-to is Bulleit - both their bourbon and their rye. For something local, try Catoctin Creek's Roundstone Rye.

For special occasions, I'll break out the Whistle Pig Rye - pricey, but fantastic!

As for a Guinness alternative, try Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout - it's rich and delicious.

Since we are on this topic,  I've been interested in learning to enjoy whiskeys (more specifically Scotches or Bourbons) as they are ment to be enjoyed (neat or on the rocks) and not mixed with other items (coke, etc...)  Any one have any suggestions on an entry level scotch thats smoother but not so complicated that it would be wasted on a novice.

Aaron,

I, too, have been training to drink whiskey straight since taking a serious hazing this Summer. From the few scotches I've had, I would say that your budgeted money is better spent on bourbon. I would second Scott's recommendation of Bulleit, which is quite a bit better than you would expect for the price; if you want to drop a little more, check out Woodford Reserve.

Danny,

Guiness is probably my go-to beer, I haven't found anything that is really that similar (smooth, creamy and light) but if you want to try some dark beer, pick up some stout. Most anything with Coffee, Mocha, or Chocolate in the name should be tasty.

After drinking Scotch only straight for years, I was shocked when I finally plopped a tiny dollop of water in. It really does open up the taste and aroma to something much different. I still drink it straight more often, but you owe it to yourself to try it.

I've also switched mainly to Black Bush, triple distilled blend from Ireland aged in sherry casks. Excellent, and nice with an occasional splash of Amaretto. (No, try it.) And warming it in your hands has an equally wonderful and much different effect as a drop of water.

I recently visited George Washington's rebuilt distillery, at the gristmill site just off Rt 1 after the turn to Mt Vernon. Brief, but highly recommended, and I've just started reading Founding Spirits by Dennis Pogue. They sell the rye whiskey made there once or twice a year on a waiting list, but if you do time it right, you could drop nearly $200 for a pint bottle. (I haven't had the pleasure.) Apparently Rye was the everyday whiskey for this country until the recovery from Prohibition, when corn subsidies turned on the bourbon industry.

Don't bother with Mr. Washingtons Rye! Its not aged at all so its crystal clear. The taste is terrible, very woody and dusky tasting. Tastes like it was filtered through the floor of a horse barn.

There are much cheaper(better tasting) ways of getting "swamped in your waders" if you will.

I understand they now sell it both ways, chokingly fresh from the barrel for ~ $90/ pint, or aged 2-4 years for $185. You choose when your name comes up on the waiting list.

Not that the aged version of Rye whiskey made like it was in 1789 is much better aged, I'd imagine.

I try to keep a Scotch on hand from each region, but my favorites are Glenrothes Select Reserve and Balvenie Doublewood. I used to stick to the peaty Islays - particularly Lagavulin - but I've started to go for smoother Highland malts.

For entry level Scotches, I always recommend The Famous Grouse.  It's the best flavor for the price.

I've never looked for Powers in a store - I usually have it at Irish Whiskey Public House on 19th St in Farragut. But I'd be surprised if 1 West Dupont  didn't carry it. They're located on P St. NW between 20th and 21st (I think the actual address is 2012 P St NW.) - they have an excellent selection.

Buffalo Trace is reasonably priced, too, and fairly mellow with a caramel and vanilla finish.  Stay away from higher proof bourbons (Booker's, Eagle Rare) as those will burn your newbie pallet.  Also stay away from rye, which is popular of late, but has a spiciness that also can burn on the way down.  You might try Irish whiskeys, as they are a little more floral and sweet than Scotch and Bourbon.  I'd try Black Bush from Bushmill's, which is a bit more expensive than the basic distillation, but also smoother (the longer whisk(e)ys age, the more alcohol evaporates off -- it's called "the Angels' share").

I started doing a fair amount of scotch research last winter, and having tasted quite a few I've determined that:

1) I don't care for the sweetness of bourbon anymore.

2) I really like the following (readily available and medium priced) bottles:
Highland Park 12 yr
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Ardbeg Uigeadail
...with the latter two being more peaty and a bit of an (fairly easily) acquired taste

Also, though not a single malt, Pikesville Supreme is a great rye ($9!)

I'm the biggest scotch guy, but I spent some time in Scotland a few years ago and brought home a bottle of Aberfeldy, which is a great beginner scotch.  Really smooth, a good amount of smoke, and not too expensive.

Also, Lagavulin is pretty amazing.  We always have a bottle around the house.

A few bars that have especially good selections of whiskey:

Jack Rose (they claim to have over 2000 bottles of different whiskeys on-site)
Irish Whiskey Public House

Also, you can order 1 oz (approximate - actually 3cl) samples of hundreds of whiskeys here:

Cheers!

Wow, this really is now my favorite group!

I am a huge fan of whiskey and bourbon.

I spent a lot of time drinking Macallan 18 before branching out. Some of my favorites are, not limited to single malt, are

Aberfeldy 18
Balvenie Doublewood
Middletons
Makers Mark

I am a huge fan of beer and whiskey tasting events as well. There is so much out there to try, just like there are so many flies to fish with.

For the beer side I am all about malty beer and local beer. I am a big fan of troeg brewery from Hershey, dream Weaver, some of the flying dog and dog fish head beer, as well as new Belgium brewery, although it isn't local.

If you were close to NJ, which I imagine you are not, finding these wouldn't be a problem.  A number of them are even available in county liquor stores here in Montgomery County, MD where the County has the booze distribution monopoly.

Whoa whoa whoa. Let's get this straight here boys and girls. Caol Ila 12 will be the first and last single malt you will ever want or need to drink. If you want a good value, Laphroaig 1/4 cask. If anyone wants to try some really out-there single malts, hit me up. I have a few.

Guinness alternatives:
Belhaven Scottish Ale
Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale

Both are on nitrogen like guinness so you get that rich creamy head. Both are available in the widget cans, but if you find the Kilkenny, let me know. It's rare.

Excellent calls there Brian.  Caol Ila 12 was the first Islay malt I tried, and at first, I just didn't get it.  Then I tried Laphroaig and the whole Islay thing made sense to me all of a sudden, and I could recognize the Caol Ila for what it is - a beautiful variation on the theme.  That Quarter Cask is a stand out for me.

It's rare.

If you were close to NJ, which I imagine you are not, finding these wouldn't be a problem.  A number of them are even available in county liquor stores here in Montgomery County, MD where the County has the booze distribution monopoly.

Hmmm let me think.

Ardbeg<#1 choice>, Cragganmore, Cardu, Caol Ila, Clynelish, Dalwinnie, Glen Ord Glenkinchie, Glenmorangie, Lagavulin, Oban, Talisker and of course Johnnie Walker. But these are just the brands I am luck enough to represent the list goes on and on. I use to be one of the masters of Whiskey at Againn in NW DC, which actually closed its doors tonight for the last time. Such a shame. Anyway, has anyone been out since Sandy?

Cheers guys and tight lines!

Well its not Scotch but its local and single malt. Wasmunds Single Malt Whisky from Sperryville...been sipping away at a bottle for over a year now. Not easy to get.

They used to (still?) sell a mini-cask and bottles to fill it. Thus allowing you to age your own whiskey. It even had a spout, so you could sample it along the way!

44 posts on a thread about scotch. Ya' bunch of booze hounds!!!

Macallan 18. More for the tradition than for the taste.

I toured the Wasmunds distillery yesterday after hiking in SNP. It was really cool to see the floor malting and to actually stand in the kiln! It was a very hands on tour....but no tasting allowed. We remedied that by purchasing five 750ml bottles between the four of us. Great way to by local if you ask me.

They still having the home aging casks scott. I bought the 124 proof malt to experiment with.

Cheers!

Hi Andrew,

where did you hear that Againn was closing?  I was just there on Thursday night and they had a good crowd.  I would be really sad if they closed, I really enjoyed that place.

Their website says they're closing, but no date. I'll be racing to get there before it happens.

I share Trent's shock and dismay that this great fishing forum has been converted to a discussion on Scotch.  Since it is obvious I can not save you from yourselves:) Catoctin Creek is a local Purcellville Va distillery that has won awards for its Rye.  It has been the final cast of many Potomac River floats and is always a savory way to end a day fishing.  Trying the local offerings is always a good time.

And kosher, too. (Still trying to figure out that one.)

I actually opened Againn in 2009 and later went on to head the Whiskey program. Thats where I met the illustrious Mr. Snowhite. I heard from the Executive Chef. There are long gone unfortunately. It was a great place but you should now hit the Jack Rose on 18th st and Florida ave at the bottom of Adams Morgan. Its Harvey Frys personal collection of over 1200 bottles. Its well worth the hassle of parking.

While we wait for the river to clear and the stripers to show, what might your favorite Scotch whiskey be before, during or after fly fishing?

One vote for Talisker.
