Found a snakehead fry pattern on line that is basically a clouser that uses raccoon zonker (that has it's color changed using perminent black and orange markers) instead on bucktail.  Anyone know how raccoon zonker acts differently compared to bucktail.  Will the bucktail not take the marker?  Does it flow in the water that differently?  Is the difference a big deal and is that even something that stores carry?

Never worked with raccoon, however,  zonkers made with rabbit strips will be a fuller fly than a bucktail streamer.  The rabbit material is much softer than bucktail also,  so the fly will have more movement from the material than bucktail which is much stiffer.

I now think the issue was with the computer I am using.  Thanks though.   Dot you plan on attending the Beer tie this month?  Let me know if you got anyone else interested in your fly tying suggestion.

As of now I am attending.

I recently tied my first zonker fly, and found it pretty hard to deal with (the packaging left it "pressed" to one side).  I'm planning on going to the beer tie (if work doesn't desire otherwise), wouldn't mind getting a zonker table going.

Matthew,

Check the packaging and make sure you didn't buy "crosscut" rabbit strips. These are intentionally cut perpendicular to the direction the hair grows, and they are cut this way for wrapping around the shank of the hook for bodies. Either way, you can probably still use them however you want, they won't look perfect but probably not much different underwater.

Haha I didn't even know that existed.  I'll have to confirm but I think you may be right.

any suggestions on good flies to tie with cross-cut strips?  Looks like I'll be trying up some furry pike monsters...

Maybe other people have some different ideas.  when i tie zonker streamers.  i normally peal off some of the fluff so theres only the actual hide.  it seems to hold a lot tighter and less movement.

I met the Eumer Tube guy at Somerset last year. First time I'd seen Finn Racoons Zonkers at work. Great stuff

"Zonker Table" Could be a great band name.

Bigger Pike and Tarpon patterns use the cross-cut stuff, like this one here that uses both types.  I try to use other materials as the zonkers tend to hold a lot of water and make for difficult casting.  The raccoon looks to be a bit wispier so it may shed water a bit better, albeit at a premium price.

You can tie a half-and-half with a zonker replacing the feathers when going after larger blues and other toothy critters.  Many times the blues will bite the tails off your flies if not overly aggressive and the zonker strips will hold up better.  Just remember to strip the hide where you tie in as Danny says and dont forget to post the first bit to prevent fouling.

Aaron -- the Northern Snakehead fry fly I tie (five times fast) is here: https://tidal-potomac-fly-rodders.googlegroups.com/attach/e5695ce29dd51dcf/snakehead.jpg?view=1&part=4

I can't figure out how to link to the post it was in (which gives the recipe and tips), but it's from Oct. 18 in a thread on 'Drum in the Potomac'.
