I have been watching the river all year.  It was flowing normally this past spring.  Starting in the summer there was not any flow coming from the dam.  I am still watching the river and the flow has not started back up coming from the dam.

This has had a direct effect on the fishing in the back part of the river.  It has really made conditions poor and the fish aren't biting well.

Does anyone have any idea what happened to the water flow?  I hope it comes back soon because I was catching stripers pretty good last year.  This year I can't find them back there.  I want my current back!!!!!

I agree.  This is very disappointing.  I hope that the water flow comes back.  I have been talking this place up all year long since last year's run.

I haven't been able to get out and do any fishing in the past couple weeks and I am looking to make the most out of this weekend.  I am thinking about taking the kayak out on the Occoquan this weekend in hopes that all of the rain from Sandy would make for some better conditions.  Hopefully the water flow is back and the stripers will start to arrive.  Just looking to confirm my theory and wonder if anyone else has been out themselves or heard of any reports of stripers.  If that is not the case I may just save myself the time of loading up the kayak and just wade Gravelly one morning.

Holt was out at occoquan over the weekend looking for stripers. He said it was super muddy with no visibility and no stripers from shore up top. Hopefully it's cleared up by now.

Headed down this evening to give it a shot. I was going to drive to Lake Anna this morning but woke up late. I;ve heard that daybreak bite is really good there right now. So, I'll be on the Occ at 430 this evening up by the rocks. I'll let you know how it was later on.

Tight lines!

Interested to hear how it went for you today. I was planning on heading out there tomorrow morning, hoping you slammed them today. If not I might have to go with plan B and go hit one of the stocked trout streams.

I hit the Occoquan this morning from 8 - 12. The water was still pretty muddy with visibility about 12-16 inches and the water temperature was 48-50 degrees. I went straight to the rocks in the back of the river, and tied on a chartreuse and white clouser with a sink tip. I didn't have a nibble all day, I also didn't notice much activity on my fish finder. I worked some other spots along the bank on my paddle back to the launch and didn't have any luck there either.

I wonder who will be the next sacrificial lamb to brave the occoquan...

The tides are a bit off for the stripers.  I am not sure what time you got on the river but the peak times should have been around 6am and 6pm.  It is two hours after high tide is when I get my best action.  It seems for the water to be moving through there is the biggest thing.

I have never had any luck around low tide.  I watched the tide closely when I was catching stripers last year.

The worst thing is that I am loosing faith in the river right now and I am not sure if I will kayak it again this year.  I may wait until April and try to get some snakeheads and shad!

Not only Occoquan! I went to Chain Bridge and the river was clear green today. But the flow was much much much slowwwwww – I never see like this…no bits and no jumps and no breaks!! I met some spin fishermen and they were so frustrated with it.
