I found an advertisement for a Trout Unlimited Tri state Conservation and Fishing camp for 13 to 17 yr olds coming up between June 23rd and June 28th near Shenandoah National Park.  I just thought it was cool that they are trying to teach kids these things.

Gene, I don't care if you do shave your beard, You can't pass for a 17 yr old anymore.  If they find you at one of the camps, I'm advising them to call the cops!

Yeah, I already did actually!  (shave)  It was getting frizzy and out of control, and I didn't look as sage as I'd intended.  I think I had a receding hairline at 17, so when I was 17 I couldn't pass for 17.

Damn.

I was thinking about going but then I realised that they would be using powerbait and powerbait sucks ... anyways, trout on the fly are more fun. Anybody know how to catch a walleye on the fly?

alright lucas.  your attempts at trolling are far more annoying than amusing.

Brendan: I'm not sure Lucas is the troll you think he is... A quick Google search of his username + "Washington DC" seems to indicate that Lucas indeed could attend this camp, if not this year, then next.

Lucas: 6-7wt with full sink lines, zonker jig flies and heavy wooly buggers with rubber legs. Don't expect it to be effective, but I've caught a handful when they move into the New River from Claytor Lake in VA. Walleye weather is pretty rough for fly fishing. Also, in my experience, you'll definitely need a boat.

Lucas is indeed a young person (not quite HS age?). He's come to Beer Tie a few times. But he doesn't need to attend the camp: he's already fished more places and species than I ever will. We have a corner of the Catch & Release board at the Orvis shop dedicated to his exploits. If he says Powerbait sucks, I believe him.

Powerbait sucks in the sense that it is like cheating. If you need to fish to eat, it would be hard to beat powerbait in terms of productivity.

Power bait is so easy it is boring. Requires zero skill. Period. I sincerely hope they are not promoting the use of it to young fisherman. You need to learn good fishing habits while you are young so you can stay interested and improve as you get older. I think things like power bait are part of the reason kids don't stick with fishing these days. There are depressingly few fisherman in the younger generations

I agree with your second part.  Im only 21.  There is a handful of guys at my school who will go out on the water for a all day wade trip.
