Hi Group,

I have repeatedly received this error over the last 3 months since we've implemented thinking sphinx on a rails app....

Riddle::ConnectionError: Connection to sphinx on 9312 failed

My index routine runs every 5 minutes and we have 3 different servers. I know the servers are talking to each other and I'm pretty certain I've configured everything ok.

I've been dismissing this error as "no big deal" because I made the assumption that this error is occurring because someone is trying to search while the indexer is running.  We get a lot of traffic on our site, so I'm wondering if I should be doing this differently. I didn't want to hassle delta indexes, but maybe that's the best thing to do. Either that or I can change the routine to every 15 minutes.

Thoughts?  I'm happy to provide my configuration files if necessary.

Chris

Hi Chris

Just to confirm: what does your indexing routine involve? Is it the ts:index task, or ts:rebuild? Also, may be worth noting the times of the errors, and look at Sphinx's log to see if there's any notices there from around the same time.

Cheers

Hi Pat,

Thank for the reply - I apologize for the late response. I'm basically doing "rake ts:rebuild" using crontab. I will look at the errors and see if they correspond.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris

You only need to run ts:index - rebuild stops Sphinx, indexes, then starts Sphinx again, which is only necessary when changing the structure of your indices. For just data updates, ts:index will do the trick nicely, and it means Sphinx won't be switched off/on.

Cheers

Hi Pat,

Why oh why didn't I ask about this sooner. I appreciate the help and that worked great. It was one of those nagging/ infrequent annoyances that should have been fixed sooner.

Thanks,

Chris
