Just hope it's better than Quantum of Solace. I like Daniel Craig but I just haven't been able to grasp him as James Bond.

And, no, I did not forget Timothy Dalton. I never bothered with his movies so I won't vote. The reasoning behind my favoring of the classic actors is because I am old school James Bond fan. Although Casino Royale was a pretty decent movie and pretty damn close to the book, it was just a simple action movie with not a lot of flair like the old James Bond movies. Give me gadgets, damnit!

Casino Royale was pretty close to the book for about the middle third.  The stuff before and after the card game and then the sequence with Bond and Le Chiffre afterwards is about it; the rest is as whole cloth as any other entry.

 

I like Daniel Craig, but Quantum of Solace was a terrible movie.  I hope Skyfall is better because I honestly don't think it could be much worse. 

 

I like all of the Bond actors (and I agree with you regarding Lazenby, wish he had done more), so it's hard for me to rank them.  It would probably go:

 

Connery

Moore

Dalton

Craig

Lazenby

Brosnan

 

...but that is giving short shrift to Brosnan, whom I generally liked save for the lamentably bad Die Another Day.

 

Timothy Dalton's movies are worth a watch.  Honestly, he is more like Fleming's Bond than any of them, to my mind.  Even Craig -- one thing about Bond which they have avoided doing with Craig is that he does, to a point, enjoy his lifestyle -- the liquor, the rich food, the tobacco, the women.  Craig is so miserable all the time that he seems like another character in parts.  About the only time they really get it right is the martini ordering scene during the game in Casino Royale.

The Daniel Craig Bond is a more realistic character. In Casino Royale James Bond is new to the 00 ranks and hasn't put in the time, he still needs to be refined, as this line in the movie (delivered by M) illustrates    "Bond, this may be too much for a blunt instrument to understand......but arrogance and self-awareness seldom go hand in hand" . However, what Bond does show in Casino Royale and Quantum is vicious determination. When he wants "it" he gets/takes it regardless of what is in his way. After Casino and Quantum, we are starting to see that Bond is developing more of his 'all-around' skills and now we introduce the Quartermaster, or Q...and now we see the full fledged Bond persona begin to take off.

That is the one thing I think I enjoyed most about that trailer was the introduction of Q. Especially when Q started talking about the Walther PPK. I got a little tingly down there.

I think Luke hit it on the head when he described Craig in the Bond movies, that he, at times (most of the time in my book) doesn't even seem like James Bond but just a typical action hero. And that is why I call his movies just typical action movies. I remember watching Casino Royale for the first time and not realizing I was watching a James Bond movie. They could have just called the character Jim Bondman for all I cared.

Again, hopefully this movie will surprise me and I change my view on these new Bond films.

The thing about Craig's Bond, for me, and I realize this is could come across as a bit shallow, was that he seemed too hardened and weathered (both physically--there's the shallow bit--and emotionally) to be fresh to the 00 system. While I realize that there is a certain amount of ordeal to go through to even earn 00 status, he still struck me as too hard for what was, essentially, a reboot of the series.

That said, I really did enjoy Casino Royale, but I also enjoyed Brosnan as Bond, so Craig was a reluctant enjoyment.

But no one can hold a candle to Connery.

Jenn, I don't think that that is a shallow comment at all.  For a guy who is ostensibly just getting started, he looks like he has been out in the field for years.  About the only way that I can rectify it is that while he is new to the 00 game, I am pretty sure he is still an officer (maybe not a Commander like he is in the books, but I am assuming some sort of officer) in the Royal Navy, meaning that he had to have handled some hairy situations to get noticed by MI6 in the first place.

 

Although I will say that from a physical standpoint, Craig may be the only one of the actors to really possess what Fleming called Bond's "cruel jaw."  In line with Serv's comment about his "viscious determination," I can totally buy Craig's Bond as a man on a mission just from the set of his jawline and his piercing stare.  He's the kind of agent who is called upon to (as M says in the novel Moonraker) "put a broadside" into someone.

Like others, I didn't care for Quantum of Solice, but that wasn't Daniel Craig's fault.  That was the script.

Tonight I saw the Skyfall trailer on the front of Dark Knight Rises IMAX.  Supposedly it was an IMAX exclusive, but I'm sure it's made it to the web by now.  I gotta say this trailer really got me excited!  Not since the first Goldeneye trailer have I been so interested by a Bond movie trailer.  This movie has all the ingredients to make it great, the question is can they combine the ingredients correctly.

One of those ingredients was a really memorable shot of Bond.  If they can make this movie good, the scene below will forever be remembered as the iconic Daniel Craig Bond (not this exact pose, but this scene).

i think that still is too dark to be the "pinnacle scene" for Daniel Craig's Bond. While some folks here have said DC is a little too...rough looking, i know a lot of other women who MELT for him and if you can't see his face very well, it isn't a winner. Just my 2 cents as to why Shag is yet again wrong.  :)

I see what you are saying, and the literary James Bond was indeed a (reserve) Commander in the Royal Navy and i think he was a commando during WWII, so if we advance that to 'present day' then the Daniel Craig James was likely a Royal Marine, SBS or SAS operator (equivilent to our Green Berets or Navy SEALs) so, a fair amount of 'wear and tear' isn't outside the relm of possibility.

Well, you never know. I think it depends on the demographic. Most kids these days will be more likely to vote for Daniel Craig while most of the old timers will be more likely to vote on Sean Connery. But then you have the child of the 70's and 80's who may vote for Roger Moore. So, hopefully, if there is a lot of traffic on the poll we may get a surprise.

For someone like me who is a Bond fan, a poll like that is actually tough to vote. Yes, Connery is my favorite by far but I like Roger Moore, George Lazenby, and Pierce Brosnan a lot too. I can tolerate Daniel Craig. But having to choose among those I like is actually quite difficult. Almost like choosing your favorite child or pet or action figure.

Ed, I agree with your assesment whole-heartedly. I am the biggest
James Bond fan I have ever met, personally speaking. I like all of
the Bond actors and only dislike a handful of the films. So picking
which actor I like best was very difficult because I don't want to do
a disservice for any of them.

For a long time I was like my father and only interested in Connery.
But my reading about and viewing of the rest of the series made me
much more broadly interested.

In the end for me it always comes back to Connery and Moore, and at
this point in my life I go with Sir Roger. I just like the vast
majority of his movies and I think he shows great range in them, from
relatively light to relatively heavy, sometimes in the same film as
the scene calls for it. For instance, in The Spy Who Loved Me, we get
both aspects of his character very nicely demonstrated. The lighter
side in scenes such as holding the fish by the tail out of the window
of the Lotus, or the last line which is a personal favorite ("Keeping
the British end up, Sir!") But we also get the very cold blooded
execution of Sandor and Bond literally gunning down Stromburg. And of
course when he stops Major Ammassova in her tracks when she mentions
that he was married once. At his best I always took Moore's light
touch to be a sort of put-upon bemusement that Bond wore to achieve a
certain effect, but he can switch it off as well (see also: kicking
Locke and his Mercedes off the cliff in For Your Eyes Only).

Connery's strengths don't need to be illuminated by me; there's
literally dozens of critics and books out there who will sing his
praises (rightly so). The main downside now with some of Connery's
films is the pacing. Thunderball, for example, feels a little slow in
parts now. You Only Live Twice is even worse in this respect. Thats
more a function of the time they were made than anything else. But
the best efforts from Connrey's era are among the best action/
adventure/thriller films ever made, so they more then stand the test
of time. Is there any doubt that Goldfinger is one of the best films
of the 1960s, for example?
