As you would expect with a 007 film, you are thrust right into the action and it doesn't disappoint. Car chase, fights on the top of trains, machine-gun pistols and a cliffhanger, ALL BEFORE THE OPENING THEME!!!
Speaking of the opening theme, as far as i am concerned, Adele can sing every James Bond theme song form now until the end of time. She was made for this. Those well versed in the Bond films will know that while the theme plays and the opening credits roll there is a symbolic montage of images. Both Jen and I leaned over to one another at the conclusion of the theme and said how fantastic that was. very impressive.
The film plays a lot with age and questions if many of the main characters we have grown familiar with over the last couple or few films still have 'it'. The film also harkens back to the classic era Bond films with multiple homages like the Walther PPK, the Aston Martin DB5, Miss Moneypenny and a reintroduction of Q Branch...albeit the Q branch and Miss Moneypenny are given a much fresher feel.
The story is MUCH tighter than Quantum of Solace. The reasoning for decisions is clear and this keeps the movie flowing. Portions of James's past are revealed and expanded on, as is some of the hard decisions that had to be made by M in her past, with a reckoning coming due. The Villain, while 'typical' for a Bond villain (well funded, very intelligent and ruthless) adds an insiders knowledge that keeps the film exciting.
With almost 24 hours of time to consider the film, there are some points i have trouble reconciling, but not so much so that it took me out of the movie or made me not enjoy the film. Mainly, my issue is the introduction of the fully modified DB5 (which is a FANTASTIC throw back and i loved seeing it...)but it doesn't so easily just fit into the Daniel Craig as Bond continuity. The only other slight disappointment would be the villain's final death...just a little too easy for a Bond villain.
Overall I thought this is a FANTASTIC Bond film, easily within the top 5 in the catalog and likely my favorite of the 3 Daniel Craig (with Casino Royale as second and Quantum a distant third.)
