I wish to formally suggest that we dedicate June 29 as
Harter Remembrance Day. That's his birthday and it seems
appropriate.

It need in no way interfere with the normal flow of
business here, but I hope that on that date there
will be a thread with this title where we can contribute
Harter stories, jokes, puns, put-downs (he was good at
that too) as a sort of memorial.

Why not keep the date but make it a general remembrance
day. Include Tero Sands and Nell Wright. Maybe somebody
can compose a compelling refutation of Velikovsky featuring
a mastiff and ending in a horrible pun.

Hey, I don't make the rules. General remembrance might
be a good thing.

You remember Tero? You have to be a supergeezer to
remember him. And several of us met Chainsaw Nell
at a Washington Howlerfest a fair number of years
back. But a number here should remember her.

Tero? No. As I recall (and I hope somebody corrects me if I
am wrong) Tero was a low volume but steady poster here. Then
he vanished. We learned a bit later, from his uncle, that he'd
passed away.

Turns out he had no use of his arms or hands and was confined
to bed for years. His posts were laboriously composed, again
if I recall correctly) by using a stylus held in his mouth.

An early warning.

Long ago on the planet Throom, there lived
a race of beings strangely like those on
Earth. Even the arcane customs of feudal
societies were similar but with notable
difference, for instance, in one Queendom
women were knighted instead of men.

And while I say "women" and "men" it is
with a certain poetic license. There were
similarities of course but without getting
into the more anatomical details, it is
worth noting that the women did a highly
erotic dance that was the dance of six
veils (not seven).

It was an odd dance that include something
like belly dancing but the gyrations were
more like an epileptic seizure. The best
dance had the greatest fit. Being a
matriarchal society, skills at this dance
were regarded as the highest achievements,
right up there with being an evolutionary
biologist. During the knighting ceremonies,
where the queen picked the best dancer,
the queen could be heard to say

Arise Sir VI Veil of the Fittest

You can't go by the copyright on the label to tell the vintage. My
guess is that anything from Boone's Farm didn't age very well
(possibly due to the screw cap), though I did think that Strawberry
Hill was much better than anyones sauvignon at that time. My guess is
that Thunderbird would age well.

Screw caps have been empirically determined to provide
the optimal storage conditions for wine. Cork taint
is a real and significant problem with wine wine
storage. Please don't presume to promote your base
prejudices about proper wine storage.

An example in public policy of the rule of unintended consequences. When
I was in in High School, you had to be 21 to buy that sweet ambrosia. A
reasonable law, and rigidly enforced. And thusly the State of California
drove its youth to the arms of marijuana.

Though not me of course.

It is the sensation of taste as the wine enters the mouth,
swills around, and then is swallowed. I'm told that smell
enters into it too, but most of my sense of smell has

Back in those days (60's and early 70's) the screw caps had real cork
liners instead of synthetic, so cork taint was still an issue. It
just wasn't much of an issue when you considered what was in the
bottle.

Get thee to thy weights and measures... That's 3.2% by weight.
Guinness is only 3.3%. Nasty Bud is 3.7%, Coors Banquet 3.6%. Most
European ales come in around 3.4% alcohol by weight; however, most of
them mark by volume. Three-two was a state sponsored gimic to both
keep the market open to teens, and to force us to swill the local
hell-brews instead of the tastier imports. Utah still has a 3.2% law.
Presumably, they hope to fool the locals into thinking they drink less
than their heathen neighbors. Regulators never have bothered to
enforce the limit anyway. US brewers will mark by volume too, if they
can get away with it. They like marketing with the higher number.

Orifices are endings, no? I'd say seven, but I've never heard anyone
having alcohol they ingested come literally out their ears, though
isopropyl on a qtip can clean an ear hole.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe ... will be lost
in time, like (alcohol infused) tears in the rain.

So one more ending and two ready sources for streaming
EtOH. Mind you, crying into your beer is discouraged.

Have you ever heard the expression tears in my beer? Along with dogs,
ex-wives and muddy 4X4s it's a common county music refrain. Thus alcohol
consumption can lead to stuff exiting from the eye area too. Let's not
forget sweat glands, which I'm not even going to try counting.
