ML stands for Modeling Language, then SysML stands for System Modeling Language. It's all!

Why is it called SysML
Does it hint to ML or UML?

To me ML looks hugely different, and since it is an expanded subset of UML, then is that case closed?

SysML is the abbreviation for Systems Modeling Language.

I meant to query whether the "SysML" name hinted towards "ML" (MetaLanguage), a Milner's functional language: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ML_(programming_language). And if it hinted, why?

The modeling language CSPm in several ways are related to ML, it's functional and uses pattern matching, and is used for theorem proving.

UML is "unified modeling language", ie the ML in UML is modeling language.

Thus UML could have been UniML, and SysML could have been SML, or SUML or SysUML.

Likewise XML is extensible or exchange ML, where here the ML is "markup language". Likewise SensorML.

No one on the UML tech committee worried about if the ML had to do with the ML language.

Let's not do so here. SysML is its name, let's move on
