A Chairde,

November may be off to a blustery, rainy start, but things aren't slowing down at the Irish Writers Centre just yet! We still have plenty of courses on offer, plus we're excited to tell you about an upcoming opportunity for Northern Irish writers!

If you want to set a solid framework for your writing, start thinking about 'place'. In this 3-week workshop Marcel Krueger will take you through the fundamentals of Place Writing. Looking at texts like Olivia Laing's The Lonely City and Jan Morris' Trieste, participants are sure to discover the secrets to exploring physical space. A writing course is a great way to develop your skills. And when it comes to setting a framework for your writing, Tracy Culleton has you covered, this one-day intensive workshop on The Story Triad, taking you through plot, characters, and theme.

We also have something in store for writers around the country as author and critic Kevin Breathnach heads to Dingle Literary Festival to teach Creative Non-Fiction on Friday 22 November. Participants will be exploring social commentary, cultural criticism and more in this one-day workshop!

If you're looking forward to Dublin Book Festival this year, then don't forget to drop in to Takin' the Mic at DBF on Friday 15 November at Smock Alley Theatre. Although our performance slots are full, there will be plenty of space in the audience. Our Young Writer Delegates will be performing on the night, along with special guests Ciara Ní É and Oisín Fagan!

Finally, with thanks to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland's National Lottery funding, we're delighted to announce two schemes for writers based in Northern Ireland! We are now offering subsidised Irish Writers Centre Professional Membership to a number of writers, guaranteed on a first come-first served basis. There will also be an opportunity for NI writers to apply for One-to-One Mentoring, with all fees covered. You can find the full details on how to apply for both of these schemes on our website!

Place writing has left the confinements of travel writing and is undoubtedly one of the popular genres in non-fiction today. Participants learn about key works and techniques while discovering methods of authors who explore(d) place through memoir and fiction.
Starts: Mon 18 November (3 Weeks)

The Story Triad with Tracy Culleton:
The three legs of the ‘story stool’ are: plot, character, and theme. This interactive workshop explores and explains these in detail, showing how each ‘leg’ is both dependent on, and contributes to, the others, and how you can use this to construct and fine-tune your stories.
Starts: Sat 23 November (1 Day)

Dingle: Creative Non-Fiction with Kevin Breathach:
This one-day workshop will explore elements of non-fiction writing such as memoir, social commentary, cultural criticism, and the construction of narrative space and time in work by such writers as Susan Howe and Lydia Davis.
Starts: Fri 22 November (1 Day)

Techniques of Adaptation for Stage and Screen with Alice Coghlan:
This lively workshop empowers writers to change the genre of their work and the work of others for the stage and screen. This in turn means that actors, directors and other creatives have a text that empowers them to realise its full dramatic potential.
Starts: Sat 7 December (1 Day)
